yeah, because nothing ever goes wrong in any other country...Is the opening ceremony going to have a replay of the Sheffield Student Games Lighting Ceremony? We could make it a tradition?
For those who weren't there, Helen Sharman, first British astronaut, ran in with the burning torch, tripped, the burning material fell out onto the floor setting fire to the carpet which burned away merrily whilst Miss Sharman continued to run to the lighting point with an extinguished torch. Magically the flame still lit on cue, probably thanks to Sheffield Council employee provided Swan Vestas making sure the pilot light was operational.
Laugh? Sides hurt.

We have a useful pool of people in Sheffield who can make anything burn...For those who weren't there, Helen Sharman, first British astronaut, ran in with the burning torch, tripped, the burning material fell out onto the floor setting fire to the carpet which burned away merrily whilst Miss Sharman continued to run to the lighting point with an extinguished torch. Day 3 of the Olympic torch in, whisper it, the Grauniad
Miserable fecker has now made me more in favour of this on the principle that I cannot be seen to agree with him at all!the article said:
The Relay of the Flame, invented by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels in 1936 and inexplicably sustained for the London 1948 Olympic games, has gone on ever since.

Clearly this torch is now worth even more on ebay, due to its notoriety and unique story - Like a penny black printed upside down ...Raify said:

Interesting where the tradition of flame procession comes from though. I didn't know that.

So, can a bad person not have a good idea? For example - In 1933, Adolf Hitler gave the order to Ferdinand Porsche to develop a "people's car" and we all know how unpopular that was...

Not at all, I didn't say it was a bad idea, just that the provenance of this tradition is interesting.
Sorry - Didn't mean to infer that you thought that - It was really aimed at the goit in the Grauniad, and anyone else who did.But the Beetle IS horrible

Shame he didn't actually develop a car but I guess nicking Tatra was a bit easier. For example - In 1933, Adolf Hitler gave the order to Ferdinand Porsche to develop a "people's car" and we all know how unpopular that was...
Is it wrong to be annoyed that a non-UK celebrity get's to carry the torch when there are far more worthy local people?
