One of my businesses is a digital advertising agency that now manages a lot of money on FB.

The performance of the FB shares has really surprised me and I have to eat my hat. When they launched the shares, quite a few people asked my thoughts and I was concerned with how it would ever make money, as the advertising system was rubbish in comparison to Google and others. Those people must be cursing me now.

Fast forward a few years and their system is great (the targeting options and the data they hold on people is incredible) and we are getting as many new projects centred around FB ads as we do with Google, which I find very strange. Younger marketing budget holders are looking at social platforms first for advertising, rather than search engines or online display ads, as it's what they know. Combine that trend with a great advertising platform and a huge user base and it's a winner for FB.

Wish I could go back in time a few years to have a little dabble.

I've bought this for the long term, I get no benefit from immediate price increases, however if the price drops I can buy more stock at a cheaper price. You see a downward movement as a loss I see it as a buying opportunity. My time frame is 5 years so I'll have to wait until then to see if I'm right.

I am thinking of investing a large amount (for me) into fb and google. Both have more or less x4 in the previous 5 years. Fb has 2bn users, owns instagram and whatsapp. Instgram and whatsapp appear to have plenty of life left in them to extract ad revenue. As the developing world get mobile phones, they will invariably be android operated. Google looks strong.

Thoughts?

Amazing what the theft of other people's concepts and products can lead to frown

Mason really is a brainless muppet. How exactly would a major US corporation be taken into public ownership from his planned socialist utopia in the UK? And why would it? How could they even break it up?

It's just his default reaction to privately owned stuff and as usual he isn't capable of thinking it through.

We didn’t see this kind of outrage when the Obama campaign used similar tactics.

This there is clear evidence showing that the likes of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube are selectively promoting agenders that they agree or disagree with. Even though they claim to be fair and neutral.

The PragerU Vs Google/ YouTube case should be interesting and may finally force the likes of YouTube to admit they are not a neutral platform.

I believe these companies have far to much power now and should be held to a certain standard regards to free speech. Or they admit they are biased just as the likes of CNN should do and stop claiming to fair and impartial.

"Similar Tactics"... mmm.. let me see..

From the blog.. "The vital difference is that Facebook didn’t officially permit CA to use its data and API in 2016" - So not similar then.

You had to connect with the democratic website to be included so likely you already had a left leaning opinion and would want your opinion shared with friends (my guess). The CA approach was to use data gathered by a third party facebook "app" to then target voters.

Have a look at this tweet where he explains further down how the Obama campaign gathered the info and then how they used it. https://twitter.com/mbsimon/status/975231597183229...

I thought demographics were always used. A bit like the electrol roll and social profiling. So Mr Tory would not bother leaflet dropping to Gasworks lane, Liverpool.
