BBC said:
The A1 road has been closed at Catterick, North Yorkshire, after reports of an explosion.

North Yorkshire Police said it received a report of the explosion at 03:00 GMT but there were no reports of any injuries.

Both slip roads to Catterick have also been closed and diversions have been put in place.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area. The force said Catterick village was "heavily congested".

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said the closure affected a six-mile (10km) stretch of road.

The A1 runs adjacent to the Army's Marne Barracks, formerly RAF Catterick.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said it did not know how close the explosion was to the barracks.

"At the moment it's only a heard explosion," she said.

There have not been any evacuations.

A spokesman for Catterick Garrison said the inquiry was police-led and did not have any information about how close the explosion was to the barracks.
Someone heard an explosion so they closed the A1?

I've put a similar thread up in the Yorkshire forum.

I think there is more to it than they are making out. Why else would they close the main North-South route?

I'd imagine that there must be more to this than reported so far, after-all, closing a motorway because of "At the moment it's only a heard explosion," seems too daft to believe.

Strange indeed.

Yep, it's all a bit strange and a proper bottleneck if people haven't managed to switch their journeys to the A19.

Thankfully it's not my weekend to have my daughter, so I haven't had to do the Darlington to Barnsley trip this morning.

Would be terrorists testing a bomb? Although a bit close to army barracks.

Don't forget we are on high alert at the moment. It's near an army base. I can believe they would go mental over somebody hearing a car backfire.

Update from the Mirror:

Mirror said:
We are getting the first pictures through which show a large police presence in the area around the A1 and Catterick Garrison.

Both uniformed police officers and military staff can be seen guarding the slip roads to the closed area.

We are also now hearing that the incident was reported to the police by a member of the public who phoned it in in the early hours.

Officers are said to be still trying to establish if there was indeed an explosion of any kind.
Further update:

Mirror said:
A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police has just given another update on the situation.

She claims there are no obvious signs of an explosion but that officers are investigating the reports thoroughly.

She said: "We don't know what it was, it was a report of somebody hearing an explosion.

"At the moment, there's nothing obvious, it was reported at night in the darkness.

"We're searching to try to find out exactly what it was that was heard.

Something more to this. To close the road like they have would suggest this .

It will be the usual over reaction to something normal. Move along, nothing to see here.

Or propoganda (along the lines of the "run, hide, tell" leaflets being handed out earlier this week wink ).

The enquiry is police-led, and the army camp bods say they know nothing about any explosion(s) in the area?? scratchchin

The next major road closure due to an 'explosion' or similar will be a major motorway further south, probably in a rush hour wink .

The powers-that-be are hostages to fortune hehe .
