Angela Merkel has stated that if the Euro falls that there is little chance of another fifty years of peace in Europe. Apart from the hysterical hyperbole in the statement, where is the evidence for the belief?

Apart from the dangers in the Balkans, which have little to do with the economy and everything to do with religious tribalism. There is of course the possibility of conflict with the former Soviet Union. Again that has little to do with the Euro.

So who in Europe would start Merkel’s war and why?

I live right on the German side of the French border and I just saw a column of tanks roll by my house.

Perhaps it was just empty rhetoric, the same as winky Mcfknut's "We have 50 days to save the planet" comment before the Copenhagen jollie.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

That is exactly what I think it is. just interested to see if anyone can make a case, in a non pejorative sense, as to who would fight who and why.

Don't worry too much, they go through Belgium when they're serious.

Might be one was to solve the finicial crisis

We go to war with france and send all our chavs to get shot by the french

In return we shoot all the french chavs

Once we have no chavs left we have peace

Considering that Germany has become a nation of hippies, I don't think there's too much to worry about.

Well, you could imagine some form of civil strife occurring. Perhaps analogous to the IRA. Difficult to see what could cause any given country to start a war in Europe, as they would be taking on NATO.

I'm English and my other half is German, do I need to build a wall down the middle of the house?

Don't worry they are bluffing, just like they did in 1939
