Labour leader Ed Miliband has defended his actions after watching Hull City take on Ipswich Town on Saturday – hours after saying he was too ill to attend a protest against NHS reforms.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Mr Miliband said: "It's the first time I've been accused of putting football above the NHS.

"I was not well on Friday, so we said I wasn't going to be at the rally. The rally was then cancelled.

"I kept a longstanding engagement on the Saturday."

Mr Miliband had been due to address health professionals and union activists in Queen Victoria Square at noon as part of his party's Drop The Bill campaign. However, it was cancelled on Friday night when Mr Miliband said he was too sick to attend.

But at 2.30pm the next day, Mr Miliband was spotted in the chairman's suite of the KC Stadium, alongside Hull City owner Assem Allam, watching the Tigers draw 2-2 with Ipswich Town in the Championship.

Mr Allam recently donated £100,000 to the Labour Party after a lunch with Mr Miliband and Douglas Alexander in London.
