Have you thought about holding in a foreign currency? Most banks will do it now pretty cheaply.

I had some premium bonds bought for me at my christening, about 28 years ago! Only 35 quids worth but they were a gift. I have never won a penny. Is this normal? I appreciate I only own a small amount but nearly 30 years with no return is a bad investment right?

Would I be better cashing them in and buying 35 lottery tickets?
If the odds are 1 in 24000, 35 in 28 years gives you a 1 in 2 chance. So, pretty normal. Only another 28 years to wait for that win. smile

If you'd put it in a bank in 1983, as a normal rate taxpayer it'd be worth around 134 by now.

I'm interested in investing in premium bonds as a fun investment so I looked on the website today. I looked at the Part of the site which shows the high value winners here

http://www.nsandi.com/savings-premium-bonds-high-v...

I see the table shows the prize the investor won and the amount of bonds they hold but what is the column in the table marked 'Bond value'?

I don't understand this part. Can an inverter buy a more valuable bond and then have a greater chance of winning? I was under the impression that you just bought a set amount of one pound bonds.

It's the value of the block the bond was bought in. eg £5000 means the winning single bond was purchased within a £5k investment

I put £12k into premium bonds in January, and in the 3 draws so far won £75 in total, think that's the equivalent of 2.5% return in the period tax free. Not that disappointed with it really as it's only a short term investment before the cash goes into a property.

Well the May draw results are up... call me cynical, but its a sign we are officially back in recession - Bugger all return for me this month frown

I'm thinking about cashing the lot in and buying a whole new set of bonds (I know that sound stupid) Just to see what happens. I seem to hear lots of people getting bigger returns in the first few draws with new bonds.

Steamer, do it and let us know how you get on...you'll only lose one drawer I guess.

I got another email from them this morning which always makes me jump out of bed and dash to the office in my pants to check (I work from home thankfully). I seem to always expect it to say 'congrats £250k!'...but alas it was only £25.

Still, more luck that I get on the National Lottery/Idiot Tax. I'm signed up to that, so automated, for the Lotto and euromillions, two lines for each draw (so £32 a month)....bugger all...no even £100k hehe

Nothing for me - only had one win on max investment in 5 months. Waste of time. Money was only parked there whilst i waited for house build, will be cashing in before other investments.

The return for that month is 0.25% - but for a year that equates to 3% return.

2x £25 this month (with is £50 more than I collected the month before!)

...starting to wonder if that investment wouldnt be better off coming off the mortgage.
