Exactly my thoughts.
Best way to deal with a situation where you are completely in the right and have no possible comeback is......
.....to tell lies and bring suspision and vengefull thoughts upon yourself
hehe

Nothing will kill you faster than a favour, eh.

They have a wedding in the next couple of weeks and this might put a huge downer on it, I was planning on discussing it with them after the wedding.

It is quite a chunky sum of money which I know they do not have.
Free wedding?

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

I have sent the letter back saying, 'Opened in error, no known at this address.'
So you've lied then. Well done.
Where's the lie? The family member doesn't live at the address. A lie would be to pretend it hadn't been opened.

On the moral side, if the family member does owe a substantial sum then perhaps it's time they sorted out their spending habits and cancelled their enormous wedding (or is it a registry office ceremony then down to the pub for a couple of pints affair?). But that's not the point of this thread.

I had two letters for my brother, opened the first one as we have same initial so presumed it was for me in my maiden name; passed it on to him, the second one come and I just sent it back as 'Not known at this address', not heard anything since.
He's never lived here and I am now using a new surname here and we were not linked financially, it's been over 10 years since we lived at the same address, so it was a tenuous link
