We moved house recently and I'm currently having an awful lot of deliveries from Amazon.

All the delivery drivers have been young English Pakistanis. Had a long chat with the one this evening and asked him how it works. He informed me that he pays £140/week for then van and is then paid 16p/mile. He earned £130-£200 a day. And that with the exception of this week (the amazon sale) he is home every day for tea.

I'm sure the main reason for the drivers being Pakistani is due to the franchise that runs this area being owned by a Pakistani but it strikes me as a pretty easy and well paid job where the only skills required are to be able to drive, able to listen to a satnav and being able to smile. Perfect for an able bodied pensioner who has no pension. Apart from the having to listen and smile bits. biggrin
Yeah sounds a good one! Could even scale it up a bit and get an HGV ticket, take on transcontinental, save on housing costs by living in the wagon, and maybe even see a bit of trade from the 'ladies of the road' .

Sounds like a plan!! And no listening or smiling required either!

Not so sure. I think with HGVs there's a lot of lay-by bum sex and peeing in small bottles required? wink

I'm told (tho have to admit it's hearsay only) that amongst truckers anal action, for several good reasons, is confined mostly to the under-50's which really rules it out for Geriatric Road Kings.

The peeing thing is something you've made up, although I vaguely recall a connection to a particularly grim thread on the PH Health section.

But driving -of 57 varieties- is probably a premium choice apres-career activity for the under-75s. Over 75 it could possibly be a bit dodgy as my now deceased father in law discovered when he reversed into the enormous window at the Porsche dealership which had hired him to move motors around. And yes. They did sack him. Instantly.

(Ps: someone should enlighten twit-for-tt aka Internet's Loneliest Hyena that directing ridicule regarding starfish-jabbing doesn't work on PH, where any activity relating to The Oxo Tower is held in admiration and awe). wink

If he only 'gets' 16p/mile, other than driving in excess of 1,000+ miles a day how does he earn that figure? Presumably he pays the fuel and even if he doesn't apart from syphoning off a good few gallons for himself every night taking the van hire into account I'd say it was impossible. Unless of course he has the speed of Usain Bolt or flings the parcels out of the window as he drives past.

Well he COULD be one of those people who doesn't have tea till 11pm. So he could be doing a 16 hour day.

Private hire driving (in the provinces) at £10-£12 an hour is thought to be a slightly better earner than van delivery , although some of both types do 'moonmiles' or particular types of work that pays a bit better, so can end up with a pretty decent weekly wage.

If the guy's doing moon miles to get that wage it's because he's putting in the hours.

Don't think that would really classify as a 'retirement job'.
