PPI and destroyed records
Discussion
I have recently submitted PPI claims to various institutions that I have had financial products with over the last 20 years. Nearly all have replied with a fairly standard "we can't find any evidence of PPI and can't confirm that I was sold a policy etc..". Some then suggest if I can provide more information it would help etc.
As a result I phoned one of them who gave away a glorious piece of information that all their records are destroyed after six years and as such they can't confirm anything. I therefore assume many of the others will be in the same boat. This leads to a question, if they can't prove that PPi wasn't sold is there an assumption it could be? Or does it not work like that. None of the replies categorically state there was no PPi which suggests they really aren't sure.
Do I just refer all the responses to the Ombudsman, do I engage with one of the charlatan practices on my behalf or neither and walk away?

If you still owe them money under the loan contract, couldn't you stop paying now you have that information, as they have no documented claim against you?
All of the financial products were historical and finished with. However if along the way PPi was miss sold and I can claim it back then I'd like to do so.PurpleMoonlight said:

Neither, I'm in a situation like many others where I genuinely don't know.
If you don't know and they don't know what do you expect to happen? What do you think the Financial Ombudsman can do?
It's not always about free money. In my car PPI was added to my credit card without my permission. My bank insisted I'd agreed to it in a telephone call. In 30 years have never taken any form of insurance other then the normal home, car and holiday stuff, and I never will.
My finances at the time were also such that insurance would have been totally pointless.
I had a real struggle getting them to refund as they were adamant I'd agreed. It was only when I started talking about it being theft they actually took it seriously. Obviously they were not able to provide any evidence that I'd agreed to anything.
This was before the whole PPI thing kicked off, so it wasn't about free money, it was about recovering money that was taken from my account without my permission.

And this is it, twenty years ago was I as clued up as I am now? No, which is why I'm challenging all of the institutions I've had financial products from. Interestingly the bank who I've used for nearly 30 years are looking into two cases that haven't been rejected suggesting something is amiss. Free money or an appropriate refund depends on how you look at it I guess. My finances at the time were also such that insurance would have been totally pointless.
