Building Society De-mutualizations and mergers

I've got a few quid in a west country building society. It's been there for over 10 years in the hope that it would give me a return if the society was taken over or de-mutualized. Are these sorts of pay-outs history now? Is there any point leaving money in an account waiting for such a thing to happen when I could do something useful with it?
