My solicitor + company has closed shop. No longer answering calls or emails.Nothing on their website, or on their front door. Nothing.

Bloody awkward situation as we are in the process of coming close to exchange. I don't want to be in the bag for several grand when they do raise their heads above the parapet and we've moved to another solicitor who has decided to work from home.

Estate agent has also gone quiet for the vendor. No longer answering calls or emails.Nothing on their website, or on their front door. Nothing.

I'm going to have to cycle across to the vendor of the property we are buying and politely knock on his door and have a chat at a social distance.

On the upside, my mortgage rate is now so low on a tracker its ridiculous.
What I would say is that its worth escalating if you can.

Both my buying and selling agents have been put on furlough, so now dealing with their bosses. Next week both of their bosses go onto it too. Once that happens they're not allowed to touch the sale, so go higher, it might be that one of your contacts has been put on it.
100%. but, would love to escalate if there was someone to escalate to/too/two/2.

My niece completed on their sale this week - it was touch and go as they had exchanged before the lockdown, but then the people they were buying from were refusing to move - it was getting messy with the estate agents and solicitors as they were in breach of contract by refusing to move. The whole thing looked to be on the verge of collapse, but talk of people being sued for costs, etc resulted in the move going ahead at the last minute.

The people they bought from left the house in a complete mess, rubbish and dirt everywhere while complaining on twitter that they were being forced out and that they had to clean the house they moved to, top to bottom.

Tough times for all in the chain, but at least everyone now appears to have a roof over their heads.

Chased our solicitor today as not had any contact for some time as we where waiting on the Vendor to answer questions / her solicitor.

My solicitor advised she is working from home but the vendors solicitor has shut with no warning. They advise to email and they will reply soon - no reply.

Our mortgage offers are valid till September so not worried about that and saving still so not that bad but baby is due not long after we where hoping to complete so getting very close now. May have to make our house into a make shift nursery which we didnt want to do.

France - household removals banned

The Chambre Syndicale du Demenagement, the equivalent to BAR has announced that the French ministry as banned household removals during the COVID19 crisis.  ONLY moves that are for health, social or risk emergencies will be allowed.
Therefore, no relocations from the UK to France will be allowed.

Ian Studd, BAR Director General commented: 'our efforts to get the UK government to take that same action continue'.

By the time the BAR get some face time with the Government, the lockdown/movement restriction will be done. I hope my company are ready to spin up when that time comes.

Face time isn't the issue. DG has a seat on HSBG which talks directly into MHCLG.

It's other influences.

On a completely unrelated topic have you read 'Home Truths' by Liam Halligan?
No I haven't; what is the gist?

My completion went through as planned on Monday.

There was one lady left from the developer on site to hand over keys and then she was off home for good. There are 3 houses left in various states of completion in our development of about 50-60 homes. The trades have up and left and it seems nothing will happen until this all blows over.

Can't move in though as house has no flooring and all companies are shut. Need to ring rental van firm and see if they are still open or not... but cancel it in any case.

Found out today that building is still going ahead as "normal", and they haven't shut up shop for now (Berkeley development). Everything else has been paused, so no signing any more paperwork until further notice. Due to move in in July at some point.

We think we're still going to go ahead, but it's hard to know whether thats a good idea or not? We're buying shared ownership, and although we really like the look of the flat (from what we've seen in brochures...), it's not our dream home, it's to get our foot in the ladder.

As an update on my previous post, no news from the vendor since the last correspondence about emptying the loft. Paid completion monies today, which completion still to take place on Monday. Let's hope it all goes smoothly ...

Transactions in progress should go through normally if slower than usual. Everything else will obviously stall not so much due to changes on lending criteria, etc, but because viewings will not be taking place.

Yep us too. Picked up the keys at 2PM.

Haven't given notice on our rental yet... hoping to tidy the place up a bit and move over in about 6 weeks.

Hoping that working in isolation we can get the place a bit less st and still be able to hire a van for this type of thing in a month's time. Won't quite be the renovation we wanted before moving in.

Congrats guys.

Exactly what I was originally planning (and still hoping) to do - get the keys and do some work to the new place whilst keeping the rental, and slowly moving stuff in over a month or so. I'm still a good few weeks at least away exchange so things might have moved on by then anyway.

I'm hoping the restrictions may be softened in a month - we have scheduled our removals for then (with an option to slide the date to the right, dependent on guidelines).

The biggest problem we’re finding is getting rid of rubbish from a clean out. We have a sofa and a few bits of junk that will have to move with us and store until the rubbish tip opens up.

We are planning on using a local waste removal company. Council tips are now closed. But send these guys photos, they'll quote it and if they can access remove without coming into contact.

https://www.facebook.com/TheWasteTeam/

Was planning this before as they are generally cheaper than a skip. Very well known locally.

Today we generated this:

After:

I was a bit naughty and used some huge council bins in the estate near my house, they collect them every day, so wasn't really a crime against anyone, and I'm in the same borough so pay council tax etc, I didn't feel guilty

Completed today at 10am. Vendors left at 1pm, removal men did their job. Apparently they haven't been able to empty the loft as the removal men refused this morning...feel they're pulling a fast one as they raised an issue with the loft a few weeks ago. Apparently there is some rubbish they've been unable to dispose of to. What can we do. Off to pick up the keys shortly!

You had a company (previously contracted I presume) carry out your removals? Good work!
