As a self employed spark, i go on the basis of £50/day covers my business costs.
As my overheads before salary is around £1000-£1200 a month.
Do you get as many billable hours a day as a 9-5 mechanic? That's an interesting metric to compare also. I imagine that the average Indy sparky will have to work more hours to achieve the same number of billable hours as a 9-5er?As my overheads before salary is around £1000-£1200 a month.

Interesting question. I would say your correct, but depends on the type of jobs. However the mechanic does not have to travel between each job, nor travel to just quote on a job, all non billed hours.
Plus the mechanic can, while waiting for a part, be working on another car. So no down time.

When a mechanic first starts out he is taking home pretty much all of his hourly wage from the get go. Let's guess at that being around £10-£20/hour? When a sparky starts out he may well be technically taking nothing from that £30/hour as he has to pay back the cost of his education and the investment in a van and tools and marketing for business.
The cost of buying Snap-On toolboxes and filling them with tools, would be similar to a van. And the knackered hands and back is perhaps something a sparky doesn't have to look forward to in middle age. DonkeyApple said:

An honest, self employed mechanic typically bills around 5-6 hrs a day - some jobs take too long, cars have to be moved in and out and talking to customers dropping off / picking up cars, writing invoices etcGassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
