If you aren't concerned about leaving an inheritance for anyone then stay where you are and look into equity release. I suspect that your health would work for you in terms of the deal you might get.

Avoid Peterlee, Station Town or any of the neighbouring Co Durham towns like the plague. Yes, you can get cheap houses there but they are going nowhere and neither will you.
Look at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Ashington, Widdrington and surrounding areas. Avoid Blyth.

PM me if you want some further insights.
Ricky146a - Many thanks for your input. This is a long term thought - I might take a couple of weeks leave in March/April and spend the time visiting the above towns.

Yes, Newbiggin was very iffy some years ago. It went from one of the main northern tourist destination when it had the mines and railway to a very depressed town with high levels of petty crime.
Move forward 20 years and it is now a very pleasant village/town with good road links and decent housing and a good beach. Ellington is only a few miles away and a good possibility.
Cramlington and area is pricey.
Good hospitals in the area including the new Northumberland one. Waiting times are almost zero whenever I have been with staff fighting to get at you!
Interesting about Newbiggin on the up. Knew Amble had improved a lot.
Hadston still the same, I bet.
Lived in Cram from 1979 to 2004 it was always quite cheap compared to the coast, Morpeth, Newcastle etc but then Annitsford, Seghill, Dudley were cheaper again.
As was South Beach which was great as close to the dunes at Seaton Sluice but unfortunately attached to Blyth. Used to walk the dog along the dunes regularly.
