Valuation is 506,000 pounds, rates are 850 a year. Six bed, four bath, 400 sqm shed and a couple of thousand trees - 20 minutes into central Christchurch - or what's left of it after the recent eathquakes.
£850 a year for a half million pound home? Now that's more like it.

If NZ can do it, why can't we?

Ours is £1512, band D, in North East Fife - haven't been here too long, but service seem pretty good (apart from fixing potholes!).

$7k per annum......not everything is cheaper in the Statesbiggrin
Certainly isn't I'm on $9k a year having contested down from $12k.

Also in the States taxes paid don't always line up with property price. I was searching on possible houses and found this,

http://www.coldwellbanker.com/property?action=list...

I had to dismiss it because it is not in commuting distance to NYC but I still went on Zillow.com (great site) and found the taxes to be $40k

Another example is these 2 properties. The first was up for sale at $850k and the taxes were now going to be around $22k

http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/9-Rockledge-Rd-M...

Whereas this one in the same town was up for sale at the same time and price and the taxes were $45k.

http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/105-Upper-Mounta...

It seems it is a lot less predictable over here and the estate agents lie. They told us that ours were going to be $4k which we knew was complete crap but I am sure some people fall for it and then find a huge bill. We also saw a 40% rise in one year because the city I live in is so corrupt (Hoboken NJ)

^^^ This.

About £1200 for me, but to be fair I now have 3 bins instead of 1.

Does anybody receive an incentive/discount for paying in full?

yes
Not sure of our monthly payment without standing up and shuffling to the other side of the room to look at a bank statement, but whatever our cahnsil tax is, it's too much.

Band B, Doncaster = 1,032. Less 25%. Could be worse.
