Just wanted to bring this thread back to life.
I've decided to buy a hypnos pocket sprung mattress & divan in SUPER king size from premier Inn...

http://www.premierinn.com/en/why/Buy_our_bed.html

A price guide...

King size bed - 150x200cm
Mattress £525
Mattress & divan £900

Super king bed - 180x200cm
Mattress £630
Mattress & divan £1050

So I'll be spending just over £1000 for a mattress & divan. Looking at the description, the king size mattress has a total of 1000 springs (no mention of the super king).
Looking online, there seems to be mattresses that have 2000, even 3000 springs in them!...
Is the number of springs in a mattress an indication of how good it will be?, or just salesman talk?

I'd image the super king size I'm intending to buy will have maybe 1200 springs, is that sufficient?

Hypnos is a well known regaded company, so I'll expect to quality of be top notch, but I'm starting to doubt the choice.

My hunch is that number of springs in a mattress is like pixels in a camera. IE beyond a point, a sales ploy 'cos that's what people want innit.

Yes, it isn't black and white. Different materials, construction methods and spring numbers all play their part.

Bottom line is you need to lie on it and buy what feels good in practice.

I remember staying in fairly upscale hotel some years ago for our works Christmas do and the bed was so comfortable that in the morning my missus looked at who made it and that was Hypnos.

I always found the Marriott Hotel beds the most comfortable, and I believe you can buy them.

+1 for Marriott bed being the most comfortable I've ever slept on and they definitely do sell them.

Having said that we needed a new one and I went for an IKEA Hyllestad( Not sure on spelling) which I think we got on a deal for £250 and it's great. I find it really comfortable and a lot better than the £800 ish bed shed one we had previously. I would have gone for the Marriott one if we didn't have all our money tied up in buying and redecorating a new house but I am very happy with the IKEA one

A bit of a theme developing.

We were fortunate enough to stay at the Savoy a few years ago. Not surprisingly the bed was sublime but what was interesting is that they sell them as well. Given where we were I don't know why I was surprised by the price. They're Saviour beds and run from a few thousand to over 50,000!
Instead we bought an Artisan from Factory Beds Direct which gave great service although the padding did compress so we ended up with deep dips.
Last year I was introduced to a trade auction site to sell off some assets from work. Browsing the auctions on there I saw a high-end furniture closing down auction and one of the lots was a superking Saviour Savoy bed! I don't think anyone else realised what it was and I got it for less than £300! Result!!!
Having lived with it for a few months now it really is as comfortable as I remember.

I have a £6k Vi-Spring in my bedroom and a £500 erogoflex in the other rooms.

I would say the ergo flex is more comfortable.

Agree on Vi-Spring. Worth every penny.

Also try phoning stockists and see if they are selling off ex-dem mattresses (seriously).
Not a good experience at our end with Vi-Spring - we bought one about 4years ago - both my wife and I get back ache from it if we sleep more than one night in it! It is now in the guest bedroom and all our visitors love it - for the first night!

It's a 3grand mattress and to be honest it isn't worth 250 quid. Very disappointing.

It's soo hit and miss with mattresses, and the fact that they can cost so much, it makes me cringe thinking I can order a £1000 mattress (which I would have thought crazy afew weeks ago, before alittle research), and still not get a decent nights sleep.

Third night on our JL 7000 Natural Collection

To say I'm impressed would be an understatement, I've never slept to deep and well. Much more supportive than the ViSpring we had previously.

£1200 very well spent!

The acid test is subsidence. All mattresses are great for a few days. And the more 'luxury toppings' they have, the more there is to subside. In short, you simply cannot know what a mattress will be like in a few months time when you buy it. The only exceptions IMHO are latex and perhaps the dreaded memory foam, because there are no extra layers to subside or compress.

Or the two two hotel chains posters have reported as having excellently comfortable beds turn out to be supplied by the same company.

You are quite right of course. Just my initial impressions, compared to my initial thoughs on my ViSpring which were a bit meh.

I think the other big consideration that hasnt been mentioned much is the base on which the mattress sits.

Most you try in store are on a sprung divans. I loathe divans, preferring a solid oak bed frame, and this needs careful factoring in when choosing a mattress and its firmness.

Bloody minefield!

I thought my winky might have been helpful as my post was (mainly) in jest.

I do note however that the CEO of one of the "big two" was on record as crowing about what an amazing deal they had negotiated with Hypnos, so whilst the punter could buy an "X-spec Bed", they had paid massively less than this smile

Of course - you'd expect a bit of discount if buying tens of thousands of beds.

Maybe all bed manufacturers could put together a similar list, but Hypnos seem focused on the hotel market: http://www.hypnosbeds.com/Find-a-Hotel.aspx

I would imagine there's a wide range of specs in there.

The point I was making, yes.
