Had some of these fitted today: http://smartstoragesolutions.co.uk/understairs-sto...

Seem really sturdy and well thought out. Fitter was excellent too. £1,000 all in.

the underside (to prevent fire destroying the staircase leaving you nowhere to evacuate from upstairs if fire starts in one of the storage cupboards)

How deep are the drawers? Is there dead space behind them?

I'd say about 3 inches.

Nice idea. What does the plinth achieve other than waste 3" of depth though?

It's all modular, so if there was less plinth at the bottom there'd be more at the top.

Ah right, thought it was custom made.

One day I might try to do this - and match the wallpaper on the front!

We've been looking at this system too - so really interested to see how you get on.

Are you happy with the quality? What sort of weight can the drawers support?

Fitter said circa 30kg in the extra deep drawers. Quality is good. Needs painting (although "officially" it doesn't, I think it will benefit) and fitting technique is probably quite crucial, but overall very good.
