I think some kind of Honda Izy is the standard answer.

Not cheap, but if you want something which actually starts each year...

Mine is an old Champion Sprint, fitted with a Briggs and Stratten 3.75 engine. It was given to me second hand about 10 years ago. I have never serviced it (apart from a new spark plug a few years ago) I just prime it pull the string and she goes first time every time, even after long periods of sitting in the shed over winter.

Bought a B&Q petrol mower for £110 - even if it only lasts a year or two, nothing with a petrol engine should be that cheap! ;-)

That size is about half a football field - I reckon a small secondhand ride on would be a better buy.

Ride on. Even a 21 inch cut would take you 6 hours

If you want top quality have a look at a Dennis Super Six . Based on an old JP design which Dennis bought and then updated. A joy to use, multiple cassettes, you can go lawn-mad to your hearts content....

As a rough guide, it takes me about half an hour to do my 250 sq.m. lawn with a self-propelled walk-behind petrol mower, and about 20 minutes if I don't bother collecting the clippings.

Your lawn is 10 times the size of mine!

So I reckon it would take you at least three hours to mow with a similar mower, assuming you don't bother collecting clippings. If you do collect clippings, it'll take an eternity because you'll spend ages walking back and forth to empty the grass box. You'll probably have to refuel at least once as well.

In short, your lawn is far too big for any walk-behind mower.

Seems like the ride ons are the best bet, checked out the Dennis, now that looks the bees knees, i think i`d just wanna look at it and not use it, such a nice piece of kit, expensive tho....

A cylinder mower such as the Dennis will give you an unbeatable finish, but bear in mind that your lawn needs to be level and free of hollows for it to work well. You have 2,500 square metres there. You are going to need a decent ride on if you're to cover it the requisite twice a week without it becoming a massive chore.

Or you could install one of these which handles 3,000 square metres with ease :

to solve , your problem with collecting cuttings can reccommend investing in a trolley with a couple of very large bins , position in the middle get the kids to follow you and its a doddle

Honda all day long. Excellent kit. They cost more but are better value.
