ok so im forever wondering whether the rates i pay are good or bad or average... having just underdone some major kitchen work on top of work over the past 18 months since moving in, thought it might be a useful post to post rates by trade per postcode... anyway here is mine

each of the guys ive used are what i would consider above average on my 10 point scale!

carpenter 150/pd
joiner 200/pd
tiler 40/m2
plumber 35/ph
flooring 140/pd
decorator 150-200/pd

postcode is hp8

Those rates are all a bit higher than you would pay in SS# Essex.

Assuming that the tiler supplies the adhesive / grout for that, if just labour then expensive.

Especially the decorator.

^ I agree about the waste. We've lost most of our stuff on site but skips last year were £160&vat, I just ordered another and it's gone up to £237&vat - 8 yarders. Apparently, rates are rising by 8% every year. The skip hire people are really hurting. It also encourages people to dump more illegally...

labour rates by postal code could only ever be a very very loose guide.
Generally (with a few exceptions with some being underrated and some over rated) you get what you pay for and reputation/word of mouth counts for more than any price possibly could.

Industry rates are based on qualifications;

Corgi Plumber/Heating (Or Gas Safe)

17th Edition Sparks

Top of the tree.

2nd fix Joiner/Proper Chippie
Plasterer
Brickie
Roofers

Mid tree

Decorators

Lower tree

Labourers

The roots.

Labourers £80 a day tops, thats tax payers as well.

The further North the cheaper, although Northerners are better grafters than Southerners.

We bring some gangs down from Newcastle, they work till it gets dark.

hmmmm ....plumber at the same day rate as the labourer... in fact all the trades seem to be about the same price in your area... are they all of the white van-mobile number only-no address-no paperwork variety ??

pretty sure that gas safe, building control and a host of other formal bodies would take an interest in any houseyou have been involved in if no one was qualified or supplied paperwork for work carried out..

Plumber is only low because he is my brother in law, BUT that is the rate he will work at.

Labourer rate is high because the 2/3 brickies all work together as a gang and inist the labourer is paid the same on the basis if that he isn't there they couldn't earn any more.

You never mentioned qualified.

You said paperwork - to those in the trade that means contracts, receipts etc

Mate charges £250/day as a sparky and is never short on work. Slightly less if subbing for one of a few companies he works for. Usually a reciprocal arrangement; they sub for him at times. VAT registered as he supplies parts. Doesnt often do residential stuff though, more used to industrial applications. Midlands based.

Prices can vary massively but if there ever was some truth in that adage you get what you pay for..!

Having said that there will always be an exception

Yes, southerners think they're smart and can serve crap. Northerners have the ethic that if its crap, they won't get paid.

We use every trade from the ground up, and i'll always favour Northern lads over Southerners. Straight up fellas who are not shy of a days graft. That statement doesn't apply to Scousers mind, they're worse than pikeeees !
