where I got ripped off / was a mug and bought a knackered Husqvarna Royal 29S for £24, I thought I'd provide some increase in pace from dull, sleepy supercar season and boring celeb threesomes with a thrilling diary of lawnmower tinkering. Try to stay calm.
First job was to weld up the broken handle. It had cracked on a stress point where the pivot adjuster sits, halfway up. I cleaned things up first with the grinder, and gave it a first tickle with the welder:

As you can see, the lower part of the crack has caught pretty well. Time for a bit more on the upper part:

That got it. I set the welder to cope with about 2mm steel, which seems to give decent penetration on this stuff. See? I've already mentioned 'grinder', 'cracks' and 'penetration'. This is strong stuff.
Anyway, the rear of the handle was cracked too, so I cleaned it up ready for welding:

Not brilliant, but I couldn't get the grinder in any further. Let's see how it welds:

Quite well, actually. That'll clean up fine.
So there you go. I told you it was exciting.
In other news, my local Husqvarna dealer is getting me a new drive belt, for the reasonable price of £15. It should be in towards the end of the week, and I'm already feeling a bit tense in anticipation.
Next instalment: rear axle strip down and repair...
