After making some good progress on dining table options (with enormous thanks to PH posters!) my thoughts are shifting towards beds. I need beds for the master and guest room, and am looking at Super King size. Will be looking to spend enough to get decent quality with mattresses that will last for a number of years. Anyone have any recommendations?

I didn't realise that was even a thing, I thought my super king was big...

OK, now I have seen Caesar 8' x 7'3" (245 x 220 cm), noted for my next house!

We went for a somnus marquis 14,000 superking double-divan (try saying that after a couple of pints !) as it was

In our price range
Came as a zip&link matress which meant we could get the base and matresses up our ludicrously tight stair well.

Im not a fan of zip together mattresses but have a super king sized bed.

Without thinking about how it would get to the bedroom we bought one of John Lewis's Natural Collection ones (who knew a mattress could possibly cost so much?).

Two guys turn up to deliver it, I was recovering from a cycling accident with five broken ribs so was no help. Turns out it weighs 68kg and is extremely big and awkward to get up the stairs. They were not impressed.

Point being put some thought into logistics of getting it into the room, especially if you go bigger than Super King.

The PistonHead's favoured bed and mattress supplier: https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/

We've got on of their super kings from the Artisan range, so cosy. We had to have a zip and link as there is no way a normal super king would go up the stairs into our loft conversion. It's also in a bed frame rather than one of their divans as there's no way on of those would fit up the stairs either.

As others have said if purchasing a super king make sure you have access for it as good mattresses won't bend and if they do it will invariably cause them damage.

We have 2 antique standard single beds (cable tied together) that give us super king width & normal double length. The beds have been in the family a long time (over 100 years).

No issues getting them/mattress up/down stairs

No issues (nor do we pay a premium) getting bed linen.

2 single mattresses are cheaper than one king size.

No 'arguments' about me/him being on his/my side of the bed laugh

There you go, get family to bequeath you two single beds and zip tie them together.

laugh Not quite the message I wanted to convey tongue out

Which was more, think outside the box - size isn't everything, sometimes it's practicality (as others have also suggested).

Alphabeds will make a bed to whatever dimensions you require. And then supply a mattress.

Not too pricey either.

We've had a beech one for 20 years; one strut broke after 9 years. They came and fixed it (and upgraded the rest) free of charge.

Gets a vote from me.

We were shopping for a super-king mattress last year and tried every single one of the big online-only foam options. One by one, they got delivered, tested for a while, and returned. While some did feel very nice for a short time, they all degraded in comfort during the 100 day trial period and I dread to think how they'd feel longer term (especially as you can't rotate them).
Some of them lost so much side support over a couple of months that sitting on the side was no different to sitting on the bed frame itself, and you were always at risk of rolling off the bed.

Ended up trying an Origins Pocket 1500 Zip & Link from John Ryan - with my half firm and wife's half medium. It's one of their cheaper options but the feeling of quality and comfort is on a different planet to the foam ones. Had it nearly a year so far and it still feels and looks like new.

The only problem is finding fitted sheets to fit. Because the mattress top/sides is quite thickly padded/stuffed and the zip link adds an extra couple of inches to the width... Super-king sheets struggle to stretch over it all. 200x200cm sheets work but are hard to find.

We get ours from Dunelm Mill, super king + extra deep. No problem on our Artisan 1500 super king zip and link with a wool mattress topper on it as well.

yes not having my feet sticking out from the bottom of the duvet is great.

Savoir Beds - only problem is cost, but it's a long-term investment and you do spend a lot of time in it.

Did you try a Simba foam mattress by chance? The reviews online seem good but most of these were likely left after only owning for a short period. Cheers

Yep, kept it for just under the 100 days. It was the best of all the online foam/hybrid ones that we tried (can't remember what they all were... just remember that Eve & Leesa were nice to start with but drastically lost side support).
We still had the Simba when we ordered the John Ryan mattress, as I wasn't sure which one we'd prefer. But there was no competition, the traditional mattress from John Ryan was far nicer.

Although maybe I'm just not a fan of foam, so you may feel different...

Thanks for that. Good to hear it was at the top, if not the best! I don't think I'd be able to get a traditional superking through the house so it felt like a good alternative.
