Took down a redundant waste pipe from a bedroom washbasin over the weekend.

It's left black marks all along the external brickwork, presumably either from rubbing against the brickwork or from someone repainting the pipe while it was still on the wall (probably the latter TBH).

Any suggestions for getting this off the brickwork without causing any damage?

Thanks.

Would brick acid not be the obvious call? We used this to strip mortar residue and the like from our Victorian fireplace. You need to be careful with it splashing elsewhere though, it's powerful enough to potentially damage things it lands on.

They are clay London bricks.

Not used brick acid before, hopefully given that it's only a fairly small area I can control how far and wide it spreads!

I had the same with white paint. Brick cleaner won`t touch it - it`s hydrochloric acid for dissolving off mortar deposits. Get some decent paint stripper like Langlows https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/252789003593?chn=ps&a...
Dollop it on & leave 1/2 hour. Remove it with a wire brush & watering can of hot water or a pressure washer if you have one. Wear goggles & gloves & watch out for splatter. Hopefully will only need one attack. Good luck!
