Want to hedge round a small south facing garden up to only about a couple of feet in height with about a foot or so depth...suggestions for suitable shrubs?

Thinking Boxwood or maybe Beech. Fairly well drained but poorish soil, bit clay like in texture.

Pistonheads. Gardening matters smile

Doesn't beech look at bit bare in the winter?

Beech Is fine, but would prefer to be about 8ft high (leaves go brown in winter but stay on)

For that size I would suggest Privet or Boxwood or even Holly. Can get some nice variagated holly (ilex) that isn't too prickly. Laurel is also worth looking at.

Upright hedging...?

Is that something to do with uphill gardening...?

Hornbeam. Quick growing, looks nice most of the year.

Box, slow growing but nice for small hedges.

Leaves tend to stay on 'though they do do go crinkly and brown for a couple of months. Want to avoid privet or anything too virulent growing
