Who would I approach (ie. what department) in writing with regards to assertaining if I can buy a section of green park land next to my house and getting a price if it was possible to buy on said section of land.

Also, the other issue is that said strip of land contains an established tree that I suspect would probably be subject to some soft of tree hugging hippy protecion order and be a pig of a process to try and get permission to get cut down (short of banging some huge nails into the trunk and waiting for a few years...) let alone physically actually removing it and its roots.

I don't think getting planning permission would be an issue as i've seen a couple of houses locally with similar conversions from ex council end of terrace houses, but the tree would probably be the stumbling block. It could stay in theory, despite meaning that I could forget about putting a drive in, but I don't really want responsibility for the tree and the whole idea of the concept is to enable us to have a drive on the land as well as an extension.

If you are not in a conservation area it is unlikely you would not be allowed to cut down the tree.

Always check with council just to be sure...
