Noticed that coming up throught one of my raised veggy bed are hover flies (the ones that look a bit like a small wasp). Looks like their lavae have been buried below ground and are not popping up through the soil. Results in loads of small holes.

I have done some research and they can be a benefit to the garden because they eat aphids, but the lavae can eat roots etc, and this is my concern because I have just planted two rows of parsnips in this particular bed.

Any ideas on a) whether they are likely to cause problems to the parsnips (and other stuff that will be going in that bed) and if so b) how I can get rid of them?

I am thinking whether I need to abandon any growing in that bed this year, and perhaps just cover it tighlty for a year, preventing any further lavea being laid. Any ideas folks?

Well, do a test. Plant and see what happens.
