Looks good. A friend has just set one up of a similar size, about 750l I think, with a 220l sump/refugium tank built into the cabinet.

By the way, is that your missus wearing just a white T-shirt in the background!?

Planting, not 100% decided yet but thinking something quite dense and somewhat landscaped, have a few baseline pictures to work from as ideas, just have to see what is available that will match!

Anyone else go back and check the picture after reading this? hehe

Tank looks great though! Looking forward to seeing pictures of it develop.

Its a cascade filter system

will take some photo's as we go along!

Planning not to hurry and properly let the tank settle in!

Just been out shopping for artificial soil, nutrients, gravel etc and a CO2 bubbler so that the plants are nice and happy

That should be a good set of foundations anyway!

What's the lighting like? Plants are going to need a fair bit of light with that depth!

outdoor equatorial but not direct sunlight sun rises at 7.15am and sets at 7.15pm

Light is something that we will not have any shortages of, also have a few suitable lamps to lend a hand if necessary,

Hmm - might need a bit of fiddling to get that set up right, in terms of choice of plants, CO2 dosage and fertilizers. At least you won't need to factor in seasonally changing daylight hours, though!

This is in Malaysia and uses only natural light, but it's arguably more of a pond with windows than an aquarium;

My first ever fish tank:

Only just recently got it and today I made the first steps in getting it set up. Bought a background, substrate and some bogwood. Thoroughly washed the sand, applied the backing and got the sand in.

Tomorrow before work I'm buying the correct filter media for the Fluval 205 external and the Fluval U4 internal then getting the tank filled up. I'll then put some chlorine remover in then dose the ammonia to 5ppm is the correct course of action I'm lead to believe. From then on its into the cycle. Sound about right?

The bogwood is in a big barrel outside soaking to try and get the tannins out of it while the tank is cycling. Once its up and running I'll be adding some java fern and java moss.

Nice looking tank.

Set up sounds good, what will you be using to test?
Glad you are soaking the bog wood, but it might take a while for the water to run clear, but it won't hurt to put it in the tank after a while, once it's set up and cycled etc.

Revrange, love your Plecos!

Here is my tank:

Had the tank for several years, all original fish (a small shoal of cardinals, four zebra danios and two clown plecos). Today four cardinals died frown I've tested the water and PH, Nitrate and Nitrite which are fine. However, the water is way too hard, especially considering Tetras like soft water...

Can anyone tell me the best way of softening water? I used to live next door to a fish shop and get four litres of RO water every week, but can't now. Are chemical softeners best? I don't fancy putting peat in the tank..

Sorry if this a thread hijack, didn't think it was worth a new thread....

Thanks. I have a Nutrafin master test kit that came in the bundle of stuff the guy that sold me it gave. Yep already changed the water once in the bogwood barrel, and its already tea coloured again. But still a long while before the tank will be cycled so plenty of time to leach those tannins.

I used to soften our aggressively hard tapwater for my Amazonian tank by percolating it through a big bin of peat.

Comacchio, I've been following your tank cycling thread and am looking forward to seeing some pictures of it when it's stocked.
Your tank set up looks fantastic.

Update on my tank after my cardinals perished all of a sudden. No physical symptoms, eating well, no ammonia/nitrite/nitrate then within a week all dead frown

Since then I've gradually replaced the water with soft RO water and restocked with a small shoal of Rams, and they are flourishing. Also tried some plants, and so far they seem to be okay.

Also got a small tank holding a Siamese Fighter. A real character who loves his food!

Really like the sand look...

Has anyone ever taken the stones they have in the tank out and changed them for something else?

all sand in mine.If you have Corys or any other cats, you do have to accept a cetain amount of movement of the aquascape, as it gets burrowed about in a lot.

My Corys love it,and I think its more natural looking than pea shingle.
