Our littlest sadly got himself hit by a car last Friday. He had his tail amputated on Saturday and has been recovering ever since. Main concern is/was his ability to void is bladder and bowels as all the nerves for these things run close to the tail at the back and are often damaged in this tail pull sort of injury.
He can urinate and with the aid of an enema (he was not impressed!) demonstrated his ability to poo too but possibly due to the shock and bruising of his rear end he's not performing well on his own.
He's not eating much and is a rather sad little thing at the moment. We have 2 different sorts of laxative now and will keep going with these, wet food and water but any other suggestions?
I don't really want him to have to go back in again and be cleared out but it may come to this.

Why not take him back to be cleared, if that's what he needs at the mo?, he is still in the early stage of recovery and this may be better initially. Speak to his case vet and see what they think. He will have less to pass if he is not eating much, make sure he drinks plenty, add a drop of milk to flavour water can help encourage him.

I'm sure things will get better soon for him (and you!) and I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Thanks Bex.
He's back to see them tomorrow night anyway and that's what's next. I'd rather he managed on his own with a bit of help from us but that's looking less likely it seems.
Poor little mite.
Thank goodness he's insured - I've seen the running total and its not pretty!
People get them insured!

They will know what to do for the best, for him. Our Maine Coon went through 4 months of trauma post road accident but she came through it all eventually, however there were times that we thought she may not. 4.5k she cost the insurance company!!

Thanks Ali. Had a read through.
Jasper wasn't so badly injured - no fractures and no tissue damage apart from the amputation.
He can wee and did manage a poo last night so lots of laxative still required. Back tonight for a review.
He doesn't really want to eat, a tiny bit here and there and only dry biscuits seem to tempt him which he isn't getting as we need fluid in.
He is very bruised so currently lives in a 110 cm cage much to his annoyance.
Fingers crossed he just needs time.

thumbup Good to hear

Tuna in Spring Water, with extra water mixed in (to a sloppy mess) often encourages a cat that won't drink/eat to do so wink

^^^ This.

Deffo add water to their food.

Also leave lots of bowls of water around the house.

yes good point MC!

Some prefer drinking out of glasses (i know mine do!), so glass bowls/short glasses (if you don't mind leaving glasses around) if you have them thumbup

All tricks, but every little helps!

hehe

If I leave a glass of water on my bedside table, Bob will get up there and drink out of it.

Love Bob as I do, I'm not too keen on sharing drinks with a creature that licks its arse, therefore I have a glass of blackcurrant cordial for me, and a glass with plain water for Bob.

Nope, I figure they've generally washed the rest of themselves after their bum so it's just fur wink

If I thought like that, I'd never touch anything!!!

Maybe I'd be a bit more concerned if I were pregnant/planning to be/had kids

I know over the years I've shared my bedside glass of water with my cats.

I did eventually change to a bottle of water when I realised just how often Fitz was doing it. Left the glass there for him though!!

Tried one of the glass bottles with the glass as a lid, they broke it!

Bottles get thrown on the floor & pushed under the bed laugh

Back from the vet. All seems well. The vet showed us the extent of his bruising on his underside. Talk about black and blue!
He's eating but insists on biscuits but at least now he has access to the water fountain he is drinking plenty. Doesn't like still water it seems.
Before

After

Still he's on the mend and that's what counts.
Thanks everyone.

Well final stitches out and Jaspers is back to being allowed out on his own during the day. He was a bit fed up being under house arrest.
Vet seemed surprised that the "gap" where what remains of his tail (no longer connected)seems to be fleshing out gradually. All bodily functions working as they should but at 3.5 kg he needs to put a bit of weight back on.
I don't think he's quite as confident as he was but hopefully that will come. He did rather have "little cat syndrome" when dealing with the others but they all seem quite happy with him.

Poor thing.

Feed him up with 'Applaws' chicken pots. Bob will eat these even if he isn't hungry.

Glad he is on the mend. Agree Applaws wet food is excellent (and their dry)

Poor little chap, just give him a hug from us. Had our Tabby for 20 years loved her dearly.
