Hi all, adopted a cat yesterday.
Any tips to help him settle in.
Also what percentage of people like cats? I ask because if me and my partner split i wouldnt want to harm my dating chances if a lot of girls hate them.
Lots of treats (mine love dreamies) and he will soon trust you and learn that you are his "dad" I say dad as you know you wont be his master right? he will be your master in no time and have you wrapped around his paw! Any tips to help him settle in.

1. Well done.
2. Food, toys, a nice bed, and attention (if asked for)
3. Keep him in for about 2-3 weeks....
I hope this isn't a thread derail - but I also know the op will be here in a month or two.... 2. Food, toys, a nice bed, and attention (if asked for)

When you start letting them out, at some point you will have to say "fine - you are on your own now and I wont chase after you and bring you back. Come home when you are done exploring"
How do you know when this point is reached and that they will come back and not get lost????

Well, after 2-3 weeks, you don't feed them breakfast. Then let them out at lunchtime. You have a bowl of food. You go out with them and make sure they know you have the food. Do this a few times and they will know how to come home. Get some feliway, which is like cat opium and chills them out. Also, I have a loc8tr, which allows me to find the pesky cat when she hides in the woods near my house.
Re dating, you may want to take a little bit of cat hair with you and make potential dates sniff the hair to see if they're allergic. Although, that may make you look a little strange.

Without a doubt say good bye to a nice perfectlt clean car interior. By now your seats will be finely covered in hair. Its the cats car now.
Also dont try and move the cat when they are settling down for a nap. I tried last night and he went for my hand.
He got the sofa for the night not his bed. I say bed its a blanket on the floor over a hot water pipe. He doesnt like cat beds.

stupid and insecure question but do you think a man with a cat would be a big nono for a lot of women? not that me and my partner are going to split up but if we did it would stay with me as i own the house.
NO!! why would it be?! one of the reasons I love my partner so much is because he is a big softy with our pets! I couldn't be with someone who didn't like animals tbh, as I have so many!
Funny things, cats.
When you say "adopted a cat" do you mean you're feeding someone else's cat (well cared for already, clean and collared) or do you mean you've taken in a stray (motheaten, thin scavenging thing). If it's the former, stop! Mrs spitfire is paying cat insurance on 2 cats .. one is in almost all the time, one likes roaming for days on end, probably being fed at someone else's house because it's a gorgeous cat anyway and people seem to think it's ok to feed someone else's cat. Thing is I doubt they are paying any insurance on their "adopted" cat etc etc and you can't be sure a non-cat lover is feeding them healthy stuff ..
Funny things, people.

No one adopts a cat. Cats adopt you.
yes i understand this .. what I don't understand is people feeding other peoples' cats thus making the cat want to stay there more and more. If it's collared and not your cat, don't feed it, don't take it in. We know cats will go anywhere they get fussed and fed.If it looks malnourished, is injured etc then yes get involved if you can help.
Plus cats are generally too cute for their own good, people just want to fuss and feed them. grrr.
Anyway as you were. Good luck OP.
