Anyone have a hamster and works away a lot

Without war and peace..............

Daughter (8) is obsessed about getting a hamster (yes I know she may tire of it but anyway)
She and her brother live with me 50/50
When kids not with me, I do like to go out and play and often go away with work so am not always at home to feed it and understand it does need fresh food and fresh water twice daily
Holidays are ok as we can find someone to look after it for a week, though there will be times when kids are away and so am I....
There is a local company called Impawtant Friends that feeds cats and dogs nad walks them and stuff so I have emailed them and asked them if they do ad-hoc stuff.
I'm also thinking of getting a cleaning lady and may ask if she does extras )

Am I about to attempt something stupid here and end up with a dead Humphrey on my hands which would obviously be a PR disaster

Not found any automatic feeders for small animals either.....?

Any experience would be appreciated

Thanks both, very interesting and useful advice which i'll heed! I think the lass in pet shop was giving me dud advice as what you have both said concurs with what ive read and against what she said
