We spent 18 months trying to buy this one's twin before being the victim of some unpleasant property practices...

Notable for a number of reasons, clues available, incl. the larger building it/they are an adjunct to.

More Oxfordshire then? It seems to travel that direction!

Any insight into who might have designed the house and its era?

I'm struggling beyond the thought of Oxfordshire (and that was a guess) although the architecture has a sort of Dutch ring to it, but how those two come together (if they do) I have no idea!

I think I'd settle for the architect's name, tbh - seems like a stumping, so maybe a little too obscure?

No... I'd recognise Cliveden! Aside from anything else this is Oxfordshire.

Yep, that'll do to end this torture hehe.

The house in question is Middleton Park Middleton Stoney, which is both the UK's and Lutyens' last great country house. The former because of WW2, the latter because he died shortly after its completion.

If you're even vaguely interested in architecture he's worth a read - remarkable man who designed exteriors, interiors, fixtures, fittings, the whole shebang, and with such variety and attention to detail.

It was never occupied by the family who commissioned it, being used for military purposes during the war, then as a nursing home, and now as private houses. Sadly not by our family after some shady dealings by the vendor some years ago, upon whom I wish every bad luck imaginable smile

I 'know' him for the cenotaph and the BMA building but no doubt there's 101 more.

Thames South Bank is the obvious call, but I think not. Funny building with a brutalist frontage but a glass canopy, hmmm.

Is it academic?

(and yes, there are 101 more - at the very least!)
