I went to Maccu Piccu from Cusco and it is easy, although I didn't walk up the trail.
Those who walk in call it the "loser train". It's a term the guides use & it tends to catch on amongst those who've walked the trail. I would add that for those over 60 plus the disabled or those with very young children it could be an acceptable option. I would further add that I suffer from severe vertigo, had four days of absolute terror but an incredible sense of achievement by doing it. My mate's 40th birthday were spent on top of an Andean mountain on the eve of walking down to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate. It's a trip nobody will ever forget making.

the trail is just a long walk in the mountains.
Achieve it first, then denigrate it.Can't wait. Just can't wait... Desperately trying to sort/plan stuff like travel insurance and transport to the airport.
Tomorrow was earmarked for planning day, but volunteering for the Bank Holiday shift means at least £200 extra into the "mountain biking the Death Road" fund, so bks to it...

I don't doubt you found it a personal challenge, but it is still just a long walk. Sam, I found this while googling just how long the Inca Trail is (44km, over a 4100m pass FYI): http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/activityandadven...

It is a long walk with a long drag uphill on the second day. Breaking through the clouds at the top of the pass is a very satisfying experience.Sam, I found this while googling just how long the Inca Trail is (44km, over a 4100m pass FYI): http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/activityandadven...
The most depressing part is watching a 5ft nothing skinny local with a barrel of camping gear on his back scamper past you at warp speed as you're crawling along snail like trying not to cough up a lung!
I did it in 2001 and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience , its quite tough if you're not fit like I wasn't (mainly on the 2nd days climb and the knee pounding descent). I would agree though it is just a long hike in the hills.

You need to climb Huayna Picchu, it's a stunning view down.
This!! Lovely climb and view of Machu Pichu, will be considerably quieter than Machu Pichu hoards too!an amazing trip, I'll be back in Peru for the 3rd time later this year...
As others have said, Lima is a sthole... though you can get some decent food there!

Try not to do what I did and get pissed the night before.
It made for an interesting climb

Quite a scary climb up I thought though.
I spent New Years Eve 2004 on the Inca Trail - they even managed to knock a cake up for us on NYE.
I week to go. Mass shopping spree today to save last minute panic.
Very exciting. Am managing to pare down my luggage considerably I reckon, wash/medical kit as small as it's ever been, hopefully still catering to all emergencies... Would be really nice to actually manage the 'travelling light' ideal this year.
The unpredictability/temperature difference of the weather is a bit pesky for packing purposes however, my holiday clothing usually consists of a couple of pairs of shorts...
