Bit of a trek, but if you're into Roman architecture, then Hadrian's Villa is worth it.

Other than that, pretty much as everyone else has suggested.

I'm also looking at taking the Misses to Rome for about a week - can anyone recommend best district or hotels to stay at, would be good to be pretty central?

Don't want to go silly money but something nice would be cool. Thanks

Casa Montani, next to Piazza del Popolo and the Borghese Park. Boutique hotel, very good location, just a few rooms, and very very pleasant.

Trevi fountain was crazy busy when we were there, wouldnt fancy chilling out there so much!

We did a bike tour with a company called top bike rental, very very good, and a great way to tootle about the city (provided it's not too hot), plenty of "big nose" fountains to top up the water bottle though, such a brilliant thing they are!

Did a tour of the Colosseum and Paletine hill with an outfit called Dark Rome which was also very interesting.

Neither were particularly cheap but in my mind well worth it.

Booked both via viator.com by the way.

Bike tour is a a great way to get a feel for where all the major stuff is, nightlife and tourist spots etc. would strongly recommend early in a trip.

Food was a bit hit and miss, a lot of the places have pretty much identical menus but when we did find some places with something a bit more interesting than pasta and pizza they were great.

Better places we found were closer to our hotel a mile or so north of the colloseum, populated by locals as much as tourists.

Thanks again for all the hints!

Drove down from Tuscany today and got to our hotel near Spanish Steps at 3pm, had a chill out and then set off at 4:30pm to do some explorering!

Walked:
Piazza Del Popolo - Ponte Margherita - Cafe (beer and cake) - Piazza Risogimento
Vatican - got the last lift up at 6pm and missed all the queues - walked up to the Copola then had a good look around the church thing at the bottom.
Castel Sant Angelo - Pont Sant Angelo - Pizza Navona - Dinner
Pizza Navona (got lost) - Pantheon - Tempio Adriano - Fontana Di Trevi (busy even at that late hour).
Pizza Mignanelli - Spanish Steps - Via Margutta for a few beers (bot bot bed). 10:30pm

4 days my arse smile Going to do the proper old stuff tomorrow.
