Singapore, 10 days ... sounds about perfect to me ...

Zoo & Night Safari are good, as is the Bird Park. Great ways to spend time ...

Have some Satay at Clark Key, and have a beer at the microbrewery there.

As above, Suntec City is good shopping, Orchard Road is great fun just to walk down.

Have some Chicken Rice at Chatterbox at the Mandarin too ... more expensive than a local Hawker, but good atmosphere, and fantastic food.

The Duck Tour is good fun, learn loads, so always good place to start.

Sentosa is good, as long as it isn't raining, and the new shopping mall on the Singapore side of the cable car is immense.

Bintan is lovely, spent a couple of times there. If you really want to experience some nature, get a guided trip to Pilau Ubin, not far off Changi. Hire a bike too. It is for the brave though!

SIA do free flights to nearby countries, you just pay the tax, so you could fly to Vietnam, Malaysia, KL etc.

The DK book for Singapore is quite good, don't know when it was last updated, but lists pretty much the good things to do!

There's a good spot for a meal down by the quayside, but beggered if I can remember the name of the Quay. It's a long strip of outdoor eateries. At the far end is an Irish bar. Prices to eat were OK, but the drinks at the bar seemed pretty steep last time I was there.
Clarke Quay?

Yes, beer was as expensive as the UK when I was last there (2004) and my wife said that 10 years previously when she'd lived there it had been really cheap.

Was heaving when I went, and this was around midnight.
You had an upset stomach? hehe
Haha - far from it. It was very busy...! Food was delicious, and well worth a visit. Very cheap aswell.

Anyone know if watches can be bought more cheaply there than in the UK and can recommend a good outlet? Considering Breitling specifically.
yes Last time I was there, my friend bought a Seamaster for significantly less than UK price, and I got a couple of cheaper watches (already had an Omega... damn!), again both for a good saving.

Don't forget to haggle!

Exchange rate is very much against you now. I found all the outlets much more expensive than London.

Go to the Zoo, Honestly don't knock it till you've been it really is a great day out and much more "interactive" than a western Zoo, when I went in the late 80's they had an Orangutan (sp?) working as the meeter and greater (much like the old boys who hand you baskets in Asda) who would simply wander around by the entrance shaking peoples hands (but he's probably dead by now or worn out) you could then do elephant rides and all sorts.

Ahhh yes - memories of Sukothai, one of the best Thai places in SG.

Also, ask around for a few places. Sammy's by the old sports club does the best 'rustic' Indian food served out of buckets and plopped onto a banana leaf. Also a place called Fatty's - ask for the Indonesian Prawns. Simply stunning.

This may sound a bit crazy but I've been considering a trip here in the summer and have hit a wall with the OH.
There are beaches around singapore right? What are they like? She has always gone on package beach holidays and I refuse to back down so if I can be sure that we can spend a few days at the beach as well I reckon I can manage to get a decent holiday out of her. Either that or I'll just have to get rid......;)

No beaches really on Singapore unless you count the man-made one on Santosa Island.

Look at Bintan Island as it is a short ferry trip away.

I always loved going to Batam as the trip up the river was like something out of 'Apocalypse Now' laugh

I was there in Jan for 14 days, plenty to do if you can be bothered looking, my highlights-

- Day trip to Banyan Tree on Bintan Island, Indonesia for golf (non-golfers can enjoy a spa day there instead)
- Zoo, very good with orangutans roaming wild in the tress above you
- Night safari, make sure you walk as well as use the trams and go into the flying squirrel and bat enclosures and see them fly around above your head
- Visit Bukit Timah nature reserve, one of only 2 city rain forests in the world, hike to the top amongst wild monkeys and snakes etc.
- Go down to the east Coast Parkway and hire bikes and cycle along the beachfront, stopping at hawker centres for beers and cheap authentic food along the way.
- Bus tours from Duck are very good and informative
- Visit Chinatown and little India and haggle for some local goods
- Do the Singapore flyer, worlds largest observation wheel
- Go and play golf at night on a floodlit course

I could go on, I avoided Clarke Quay and Orchard St as much as possible, as I found it hard to find good authentic food there and it's all a bit touristy.

The train and bus network is great, buy a prepaid card and go and explore!
