going on my first ski holiday with my sons 11 & 7, a lads only affair. Going to Bardonecchia in Italy. any reccomendations?
Can they ski?

If not I'd recommend some lessons before you go to maximise the time available to you. Even if they can, a private instructor is often well worth the money IMO. My wife and lad got a huge amount of skiing with a guide / instructor last year (and it turned out over lunch that he thought with my dad in Aviemore back in the late '70's!)
Completely agree with schmalex here. The premium for a private instructor is not massive and has been so good in bringing ours on in a short time (14 & 11). well worth the money and leaves you with the rest of the day to ski with them.

Another one agreeing here.

If they have never skied before then on the holiday it might be 3 days just on the nursary slope leaving 3 remaing at best for trying out some pistes.

Get them to learn how to snow plough and turn properly here - such a worthwhile investment.

Off to St Anton in Feb with VIP Ski, never been there before so any tips welcome
Enjoy it!biggrin I've been over 40 times in the past 18 seasons and have seen a few changes in town (for the better). Skiing is great ... if you get some fresh snow, head up to Rendl or over to Stuben first thing away from the crowds (you need to be on the first lift) before the ques start and it gets tracked out.

Well worth a trip to Lech or Zurs or both if you do the Wiess Ring (white ring) which requires a bus to and from Zurs. Lech can get pretty busy but there's some decent terrain and great places for lunch ... we always eat the Berg Hotel in Oberlech ... great food and for people watching.

Plenty of good eateries in town too ... I would say the Museum is my favourite restaurant. Antony's is great for a drink on an evening ... Apres ski then it has to be Krazy Kanguru, Taps and Mooserwirt ... they're all mental when it kicks off. My days of crazy apres are over with ... I prefer a quieter night around the newer bars in town.

Got 10 days there myself in mid March, only the one trip there this season. Got a week in Vail in 2 weeks time ... 6 ft of snow in the last 2 weeks of December so hoping it will be an epic week!!

Cheers for that! Just popped in and wasn't expecting such a useful post.

My wild apres days are behind me too. Im 36 this year and frankly it's all about the skiing and food these days so your tips will come in very handy.

Im in the Hotel Montjola, hopefully this is an ok location?

Bon ski!

Just back from the Grand Massiff area, was 8 degrees yesterday and the snow cover went from being poor, to nearly non existent by the end of the week. They desperately need cold temperatures and some decent snow.

You're welcome!beer

Yes well there's plenty of choice for places to eat. The Monjola if I remember correctly is slap bang in the centre of town .. not stayed there but friends in town say the bar/restaurant in the hotel is very good. Town isn't particularly big so you wont need to walk far. I'd try and choose a room at the rear as it might be quite noisy at the front!

Other paces to try for food are Aquila, Petes (above Sport Pete), Hazienda ... if you like Thai the Skiing Budda which is a little out of town and next to station. Loads of places to have lunch ... we tend to eat at the self services places to save time.

One place I recommend is the Hospiz Alm in St Christoph for lunch one day. Great food and wine plus a super atmosphere ... my best lunches there have been when its been crappy weather and we've sorted a good table and enjoyed a few hours in there. You can also take the slide down to celler/toilets if you get hammeredbiggrin

Got to love the Europeans attitude to H&S!

Reminds me of the outdoor pool at 'les trois hotels de la chaudanne' where they are quite happy for us swim with glasses held aloft! hehe

Thanks again!

Back to Verbier for half term with my six year old son....this is a Dad's and Lad's trip...did the family thing at Christmas.

He can ski down reds and blues now so going to ski with him half the time and put him in private lessons the other three mornings.

Some light snow due towards the end of the week but freezing point is around 1500m still.....low resorts looking very very grim.

I've been keeping an eye on various webcams and it's not looking great, generally. This week has seen a massive thaw across much of the alps, which is very worrying. There is more snow forecast generally for this week and lower temperatures across much of the region, bringing the freezing level down to around 600 / 700m, so fingers crossed.

Off to Montgenevre next Tuesday... anybody know what the snow is like firsthand out there?

Suspect not good but I ride park mostly anyway (though the park isn't good there but meh).

It was 18c here in Tirol on Saturday, all the snow below 1200m has gone.
A friend of mine was at St Anton at the weekend and he said all the snow above 2000m was quite soft and slushy. Another friend of mine in Zurich told me it was also 16c over the weekend. Its cooled slightly now, but still above freezing at our level 500m.

Next weekend were predicting 20-40cm above 1500m...we can only hope

Whoa! Worst I've ever ridden in is +13 and that was horrific (and in Fernie of all places). Frozen in morning and puddles everywhere by 11am, came in looking like I'd been for a swim.

Just back from a week in Avoriaz, lovely village/resort and stunning weather all week, good enough snow, most runs open. Wouldn't like to have been arriving this week tho, on transfer day the rain was heavy and everything was turning slushy. Snow forecast for Thursday. Good to meet feef too.

Looks like temps are dropping again later this week so next week could be a decent week. Most of the Alps needs an EPIC dump!

A bit forecast, but not huge amounts. I presume they'll run the snow makers flat out?

Out for the first week in February - what do the 3 valleys look like (courchevel particularly)?

Good to meet you too. The snow cover is normally much better than that tho, seriously better!

Was up around Avoriaz yesterday and above Chatel today and actually amazed by how good things are - considering.

Yes there's patches of ice and a but of slush lower down but no crust on top and skiing well all day.

Just got back from a weekend in the Grand Massif, drove up to Flaine on Saturday but the snow was so thin and so slushy I didn't even bother getting my skis out of the car, went for a picnic on the mountain then back to the chalet to build a shed. Pissed it down all Saturday night and Sunday morning so didn't bother at all on Sunday, wandered into Morillon and had a few beers in the bar instead. Went up to Samoens this morning and the skiing was great, a little icy in places but the best I've seen in the past 3 weeks. Back next weekend and there's some more snow forecast so hopefully things will only get better from now on. Bloody typical, this is the first time I've rented for the season and so far I've managed less skiing than I do on a weeks holiday! grumpy
