Europe is really no more expensive than most of the UK. London prices are comparable to Paris, I'd imagine. Southern France, in the holiday hotspots, is like Devon/Cornwall. In the rural areas it's very reasonable to most things - beer, shopping, gifts, days out etc etc. My parents go there a lot and holiday on a budget all the time..
Paris is currently the most expensive City in the world, outside Japan (Tokyo and Osaka are 1st/2nd).

Southern France priced like Devon/Cornwall? rofl

FWIW, London is 27th (down from 8th 6mths ago)
Well I haven't been to Cornwall lately..but I remember St Ives a few years ago being horribly expensive..

Also heard Cornwall gets more sun than most of the Dordogne.. which surely is BS, lol.
You are joking shirley?

Most of Devon and Cornwall are far cheaper than almost anywhere else I've been in this country let alone Europe. As for St Ives being expensive you obviously went to the wrong places while you were there!

I can also categorically deny that Cornwall has more sun than the Dordogne, every bd time I end up in Cornwall it bloody rains, most of the time in the Dordogne it has been sunny (with the odd mega thunderstorm thrown in).

Avoid the tourist spots and its not that expensive at all. Its the exact same as London. You go to the hot spots you're going to get fleeced.
I'm sorry, I disagree. When in Paris last year I went to several distinctly "local" establishments off the beaten track and it was still scandalously expensive.

You guys must be all really rich! I can't imagine paying those prices. Have you tried learning a bit of the local lingo and asking where you can get a reasonably priced beer and some good local atmosphere?
2-3K up a mountain, you don't get a huge amount of choice...

I guess you'll all be coming to visit me in Blackpool this year then? laugh

The Golden Mile was named as such because at one time it was the preserve of the wealthy and well heeled in society- I wonder if history will repeat itself?rotate

Just come back of a short skiing break in Italy and while I know it's always been expensive it just seems to have become ridiculous.
No, it's not normally that expensive, it's just we don't like the English: you make too much noise, dress like tramps, get drunk all of the time, ask for chips with everything, insist on drinking cappuccino after 11am and, worst of all, refuse to wear sunglasses indoors.

Oh yes, and your women are fat... but on the plus side... they are easy.

During the world cup we were paying 8 Euros for 500ml beer. This is way more than London.

Well I go to France once a month and have done for years and of the 50-60 times I've been in Paris I've always found the prices similar to the UK. You must be ordering in English. biggrin

EDIT. Obviously in recent months the exchange rates changes but their drinks prices haven't.

France last year was an eye opener for me.
Even with the rate at 1.45 it wasn't worth buying wine or smokes over there. Most of the stuff in Carrefour was miles more expensive than I was expecting. And drinking out was horrendous (I hope it was just because it was Le Mans week but I remember paying £7 for a pint at a restaurant miles away...)
Just as well we will be mostly SC in northern Spain this year I saw. A week of BBQ and beer.
Luckily I have Turkey in June where I have had confirmation that a pint is still £1 like last year, a top notch lunch is about £4 and I can enjoy a three course dinner on the beach for less than a tenner.
It's places like Turkey and their VFM that reflect why we haven't been on holiday in Europe for 8 years now. And I don't see to be the only one who has knocked Europe on the head since they joined the Euro.

All of Europe took a battering when the Euro came in. My mum is Dutch and she says that on the changeover, retailers just priced stuff at 1 Guilder = 1 Euro, and the same happened in Germany.

I know that our villa hols in the S of France, supplemented by good cheap supermarket food got horrendously expensive the year the Euro came in.

biggrin Thats probably it then. To be fair I am a big fan of Breton Cidre so my experience does tend to be based around ordering that and wine.
