Had a great day in St Anton today. Most of the powder has been skied out over the past couple of days but there is quite a bit if you know where to look. Lech/Zurs tomorrow and then home.

I have forgotten just how boring it is skiing alone though frown
What about getting or guide? I know there are a few Brits based out in St Anton may be worth heading over to Snowheads and trying to organise a meet.

Skiing on your own can be quite liberating, going at your own pace, stopping when you want and listening to some tunes. I do agree though it becomes tiresome I wouldn't like to do more than a day or two.

We're going to Val d'allos in France on 18th March. Driving down (naturally). Very cheap ski holiday. Looking forward to it. Forecast looks great too!

Each to their own, I love skiing on my own - No adjusting your pace or adding/removing breaks for other people - Want to stop and admire the view, just do it, want to hare from top to bottom without worrying if the wife's fallen over (to be fair, she rarely did, until this year! frown ), go ahead!

I spent a great post Easter weekend in St Anton on my own once, one of my favourite ski memories as the rain of the first day that almost sent me home after a day turned to lovely fresh powder and sunshine on day two!

Just come back from Sierre Chevalier {sic} -Friday night it bucketed down with snow - I reckon close to 15" or so on some of the slopes.
God this skiing powder snow is hard work. It took half a day of reasonable conditions to ski the fresh powder off the pistes, and there were few unmarked off piste areas at the end of Saturday.
I always think Serre Chevalier is massively under-rated.

I've been there 3 or 4 times and each time the snow was at least good (first time, the snow was a bit so-so, but it was absolutely awful in all the local resorts, we just visited for a day to get away from the rubbish snow in our resort!). I had the best powder skiing I've ever had in Europe here too and my favourite Chalet holiday too.

The armchair experts look at its low elevation and write it off without ever visiting, but I think it's brilliant (I'd rather go there than the 3 Vallees to be honest!).

Off to La Plagne tomorrow. A new resort for me. Courchevel and the 3 valleys was great last month so hopefully this will be as good. All the snow reports seem encouraging. Hopefully Chambery will be bearable smile

Just back from La Plagne. Really good, some great areas of off piste, loads of snow. The gondola from bellecote can have long queues do try and avoid it or get Arpette lift up and ski down to belle Plagne and get on hand gondola from their.

How funny, were off to La plagne tomorrow as well.
Was also in the three valleys last month and it's the first time in La Plagne also.

Train to London for the night tomorrow then Eurostar down to Aime on Saturday, should be nice and relaxed instead of dealing with airports and lengthy transfers

f it has snowed it takes ages up the mountain from Aime. I tore tendons in my ankle near Montalbert, had to catch a bus down to Aime and then another from the station up to the medical centre at Bell Plagne, took forever!

Chaps,

A leading question. How late do we think the season will run this year?
I'm considering a cheeky last minute outing...

Lots of resorts shut the week after Easter - Where are you thinking of going.

Just looked at Les Arcs, it's stating 16th April.
Hmmm, interesting.

We're driving to Montgenevre on the 25th for a week. Currently 2.5m of snow with some more expected and and closing date currently of 23/4

I have two small children with three days experience and a wife who can ski but likes easier resorts so that suits us perfectly - we're going with 40 other friends so should be a good shout smile

Closing dates remain pretty static unless it's been an awful season for lower resorts/those without glacial skiing. Most will remain open come hell or high water for Easter but Easter falls early this season. Lech, St Anton, Solden, Obergergl etc will remain open until the end of April. It's usually a case that there's a lack of skiers rather than a lack of snow. Higher resorts they piste bashers go out and break up the pistes to help it melt quicker.

Quite a fun time to be in resort as most will put on something for closing-concerts etc.

I love skiing late season, nothing better than enjoying a cold beer on a sun drenched terrace skiing in a t-shirt!

biggrin

On the other hand some find skiing at this time of year challenging, if it's warm (as it usually is) it's boiler plate in the morning then cut up to slushy in the afternoon-slush is lovely though-poor mans powder! Home runs have moguls the size of mini's. Of course if you enjoy this sort of terrain it's great fun!

There's usually a sweet spot in the day of a couple of hours where it's soft but not slushy. Really pays to have a bit of a lie in or quit early and hit the bars!

I'm a snowboarder. Slush is ok, it's just like surfing. Moguls are a problem - doubly so if you don't see them in time....

The first one is never a problem. Neither the second. By the third I'm a bit ragged. I generally hit either the forth or fifth.
At this point I usually do my signature trick of "the ninety".
And it's the one after that that's generally a problem.

This year one of the runs was lovely until about 2pm. Then bumpy.
I came down it at about 3:45 and there was a mogul field I simply didn't expect....

I'm planning on skiing every month this year, so there's no need to end the season if you don't want to, wink
