Unfortunately all heading in the wrong direction. I lived here for a couple of years between 2003-05, when the place hit the headlines courtesy of Mark Thatcher. It was the only sub-Saharan Spanish colony.
Utterly bonkers place. Some beautiful beaches like the one in the picture, dense rainforest, volcanos, paranoid security forces, police who didn't give a dam what you did, friendly locals who lived in total poverty, Morrocan Presidential bodyguard tearing around the capital drunk in Merc SL500s, totally corrupt. The French seized the presidents sons assets in France a few years back including 2 Veyrons, Enzo, Maserati MC-12, Carrera GT,599GTO & a couple of Rolls.
Despite this I had a great time in the place.
