Did a week round France this year in the spring and really enjoyed it, this was my post detailing my route :-

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

ended up basically 2000miles. Then went to South West USA and did 2 weeks, but experimented with off roading so slower progress, did about 2000miles aain, so in two weeks in Europe I'd say 3400miles ish would be about the maximum I'd want to do. I trackday my sports cars so no interest in running my A6 round the ring. Where would people suggest for a nice scenic tour of Germany? A mixture of Autobahn and countryside roads as appropriate to get between the best bits?

off the top of my head: in through france, vineyards etc along the Mosel to Koblenz, up the Rhein, then from Mannheim the 'Schlösserstrasse' seeing castles etc or into the black forest and Bavaria and the Alps, up the east, Dresden maybe, Berlin, back along the 2 autobahn, call in at the dambusters dams maybe

technik museum(s) near Mannheim too, for car/plane related stuff

Unfortunately the website is only in German but this place near Oberstdorf in Bavaria is worth a visit - http://www.breitachklamm.de. Particularly impressive in winter when it's all ice.

I can recommend Berchtesgarden, if you do get there you must visit Hitler's tea house on the mountain top.

Nuremberg (they call it Nurnberg), Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Fussen, drive through the Alps and over the border through to the Austrian Tirrol or Italy to see the Stelvio Pass (its just a few hours away from Fussen).

Google 'The Romantic Road' for a German road trip.

I'd substitute Bruges or Ghent instead of Brussels (but that's just because we found Brussels a bit dull) and Heidelberg is a very nice town to visit.

Sounds a great plan and very similar at the start to ours this coming May.

Do you plan to spend time in all the places you have mentioned or are they just an indicator as to the general route you plan to take?

Indicator of the route, once we have a rough route I'll have a look for hotels, we'll spend most of the day driving but stop start, getting out to look at places, have lunch etc.

Definately recommend Fussen yes

Found the Romatic Road a bit of a disappointment except the last 30miles or so leading to Fussen - which would be the first 30miles or so leading away from Fussen for you.smile

While at Fussen we took a drive across to the Zugspitz which is the highest mountain in Germany and took the cable car trip to the summit. Not good if you don't like heights but a great trip. We even threw snowballs at the top...at the end of July!! smile From memory there may be 2 ways to go uo by cable car - the German side and the Austrian side. Best to Google it to check what suits.

The Zeppelin Museum at Friedrichshafen was interesting as was a visit to Heidelburg to the castle (great views). We also took in the Peace Museum at Remagen which is built into the stanchions of the actual bridge over the Rhine.
