Shirley, it would have been far better to have attempted to get ESTA clearance and only if the application flagged up an issue, then gone through the aggravation of a proper face to face visa visit to the embassy?

The US and the Aussies work on the basis they'd rather you didn't go IMO. tbh I see not an awful lot wrong with the approach.

I'm not so sure that's the case - I think it's more about them (quite arrogantly) assuming that everyone who visits has potentially illegal immigrant intent and as a result are deeply suspicious of every visitor.

As others have said - had the OP just applied for ESTA he would have breezed it. Kind of opened up a can of worms for any future visits due to the B2 application. Be prepared for a visit to immigration secondary when you arrive too.
