In North America the use of a credit card is pretty universal in hotels. They do a hold when you check in ( basically a provisional charge to your credit card which establishes that you have sufficient credit for the stay)...you never actually see this as it reverses automatically when they process the actual bill on checkout.

I have a couple of cards but the only time I take them with me is when travelling on French toll roads. I don't know my PIN numbers.

I still prefer cash, I like the discipline (you can't spend more than you have), no risk of cloning, it's anonymous, never declined and I like having a roll of notes in my pocket.

Debt free wink

The area I live in is quite rural so card use is less prolific than in towns. I don't really go shopping other than the odd beer run to a supermarket. I have an account at a local garage for fuel. If we go away we take some cash, so other than buying stuff online I don't really have any reason to use a card. They just sit in my desk draw.

How is life in your Ivory tower?

I can go for months without physically needing a card, I work in a job which takes cash and most things online can be paid for with Paypal.

Well, yes, I'm debt free, too.

But it's much easier to tap my phone or card on a reader than it is to go to a cashpoint, take out cash, carry notes and coins around etc.

In the modern world, cash is in decline - I'm running a project to replace chip & pin readers with upgraded contactless versions at the moment - the first one I installed saw an instant hit of 25% of all transactions moved to contactless on day 1 and it has been growing consistently since.

I agree, I rarely have cash even the pop up food places in London take contactless cards these days. I did get caught out yesterday, went to Altrincham Market with my team for lunch. A couple of the places didn't take cards.

But, I think there are plenty of the older generation who rarely use cards. Especially those who were always paid in cash on a Thursday every week

It probably benefits me more as some people pay my invoices in cash. It's cheaper and easier for me to put that into petty cash and pay as wages than it is to pay it into the Bank.

You pay wages in cash?!

You really are stuck in the dark ages.
