Guess what I'm on tomorrow?! Why is it bad?
Not a bad service thing at all - I have always quite enjoyed the ferry trip itself, but the OP was after cheap, and that route is absolutely not cheap, even given travel costs down South and back up again.
Take the 4 hour drive down to Dover would be the obvious suggestion to save £400. Not sure where you are heading after Zeebrugge but if east rather than south, the DFDS ferry from Dover to Dunkerque is always dirt cheap and will drop you on the coastal autoroute only 50 mins or so from Zeebrugge.

the destination of zebrugge doesn't win me anything unfortunately....the plan is a eurohoon of suitably "honeymoon-esque" destinations, so the plan is something like...
hull ferry to zebrugge
reims
grenoble
monaco
sanremo
geneva
strasbourg
brugge
then overnight ferry to back up north.
the idea of using the hull overnighter isn't to save money but to bookend the honeymoon with a more relaxing travel option other than doing the dover to cumbria run that can be a bit of a ball ache even if the traffic flows well.
