We are landing in Los Angeles on march 8 for a 2 week holiday. We are really hoping to be able to get hold of a ford mustang or similar ( not a Chrysler Sebring!)

We don't want to spend silly money but we don't want a crap box either. Other than the usual suspects, are there any decent hire companies I should consider? Also knowing which to avoid would be useful.

Thanks in advance!!

Id be interested in reading that if you do publish a blog, captain muppet. We are going from LA to Vegas to San Diego, up to San Francisco and back down the pacific coast. A lot of driving but should be fun and the main reason I want a cool car to do it in.

Thanks for your replies so far. Id love to get a C6 or a Camaro but I think we are struggling as it is so I very much doubt we'll be able to afford one of those unfortunately.

One thought we have had, as a compromise is to hire something a bit crap for the majority of the trip and get a mustang for the Pacific Coast Highway. Its not ideal but it may be the only way we get to drive something a bit special.

Mrs Lemons isnt too bothered about fun cars and my stock of brownie points might be a little low since I have just booked tickets for the NASCAR in Vegas, she may use that as a veto to renting something more expensive although I have promised that I will spend as much time shopping with her as we spend at the race so you never know......

I'm finding a few reasonable looking prices but they all have the 'cant guarantee model' caveat. I'm wondering if we stick to a bigger company will we more likely to get what we want?

This is more stressful than I had imagined!

Well I've finally booked. We've had to compromise due to budget so we've gone for a cheaper option for the first week so that we can have the mustang for the pacific coast highway in week 2.

Everyone's suggestions have been really helpful, now I just hope that when hertz say guarantee this model they mean it!!

As stated by a few of us, the Hertz "guarantee" is a bit ropey. They were happy to match it for us when we produced a printed email receipt of the order, but it still had to be approved by a manager. Go prepared and you'll be fine.
Yeah I realise it might not be 100% guaranteed but they are the only company who appear to offer to guarantee a particular model. Ill probably contact the branch to see if they can confirm the availability of the mustang
