7 day tour close to NYC

My wife and I are flying to Newark airport in a month and have hired a car for 7 days. We're ending the trip with a couple of nights in Manhattan (we've been before) but looking for ideas to spend the first 7 days on a mini road trip. I don't want to spend every day driving, although don't mind putting in one or two long hauls. I thinking possibly Boston via Cape Cod (Provincetown).

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm leaning towards an anti-clockwise loop via Rhode Island (Newport), Cape Cod (Provincetown) and Boston.
