Saw this on the BBC site; a debate about people who bring their breakfast to work and wondered what the general opinion was?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-11759385

When I was in a proper job it did annoy me when people started their day in the firms time with drinks and food when they had just got to work and hadn't donme a stroke but then I am a grumpy old man. I know that if I employed someone who wanted to arrive at work and then start eating breaklfast it would annoy me no end and thuings woulod be said, especially as they are doing it in my time while others have started work.

My employer condones this.

They have installed a cupboard 'thingy' in our kitchen for staff to put food in.

Company also pays for milk.

Very generous.

And, as you say many of my colleagues eat their breakfast at the desk - some of them often only eating at 9:30 - 10 am..

I don't mind people eating cereals etc at their desks... it's lunchtime that gets me when the office stinks of various meals. vomit
Why they can't eat in the breakroom escapes me.

I eat breakfast at work and have done for as long as I can remember. Its very rare I can stomach any food first thing in the morning so by the time I've gotten to work I'm ready to eat. I'm also the sort of person who stays past the hometime so fail to see how it concerns anyone else to be honest. Only one boss had a problem with it so I played the time game with him and made sure come 5.30pm I was logged off and out the door by 5.31pm. He soon became less anal when he needed some help.

I'm in two minds about this. I like to eat in peace and quiet and am not for the usual small talk you have to make in a break room "ooooo that looks nice did you cook that yourself" etc etc. My past couple of teams have been very good. They let me know if my food smells fine or stinks so I respect their comments and move if my food is particuarly strong smelling.

We do a 7am-3pm without lunch break so we have to eat at our desk and as we do reception duties we have no choice. so it does not matter wether it is breakfast or not.

From another POV:

I eat at work for a very simple reason:

Leaving at 6:45 could get me at work at 8:00.
Leaving at 7:00 could get me at work at 8:30 at best, often 8:45.

So a quick bite at work rather than at home saves me an easy 15 minutes of traffic, if not more.

I eat at my desk while I watch TV... I can't really be away from the desk if there is no cover. I have lunch and dinner there as well if I'm on nights. Chinese and pizza take-aways can smell the place out though but everyone does it so it's not too bad.

No. Even worse is when they return to their desks with that delightful smell on their breath.

Why would it annoy you if they were eating breakfast in their own time?

I arrive 1/2 hour early so I can have a fry up in my company's resturant that serves breakfast.

We do not have a break room, nor do we even have a kitchen. We have a kettle & fridge provided by the company, but staff have added a toaster and mircowave. All of this just sits in the corner of the office. We have no choice lunchtime but to eat at our desks, but most of us continue to work during our lunchbreaks.

Not that I care one way or another, but that's the worst excuse in the world. What has it got to do with your emplyer that you would need to get up 15 minutes earlier to eat breakfast like everyone else in the whole world?

I have a bowl of muesli each morning at work. (Yummy, Dorset Cereals)

But, then again, I do start an hour and a half before anyone else.

Well, it's just that a regular day starts at 8:30, and I can arrive at work at 8:00, eat comfortable and start working at 8:10. My employer prefers this above me arriving at 8:30 like everybody else.
Who wins by having me in the car an extra 15 min? I gain at least 15minutes without the need of rising earlier.

It's win-win for everybody.

My place even provides breakfast...

It's saved me a few quid in the 3 odd years I've worked here...

Sorry, missed your point. You weren't clear that you were doing it in your own time.
