Never inherited anything and I doubt I'll inherit anything in the future, either. smile

I got £25 from my Grandma about 20 years ago....I think her gift was worth a lot more at the time she wrote her will.

A totally unexpected and quite sizable lump o cash from a distant relative.... still makes me smile when I think about it.

Nothing. And I'm not likely to get anything from my parents either, they've nothing to give.
My Dad doesn't have much but I'd much rather he spent it on a good time for himself than fretting over leaving it to me and my brother and sister - he could spend the fking lot as far as I'm concerned.

What have I inherited? To date, nothing. Granddads medals and such forth are expected in the near future (he can't go on much longer and my Grandma, whom has been married to him for sixty years is probably praying for the end because he's an awkward old bd, lol) - WW2 medals plus other assorted army memorabilia from his days in the forces.

Nothing really, mum and dad (step dad, but dad really, and not so well) have a few properties and some heirloom jewelry and stuff (five figure rings, loads of Clarice Cliff, etc), which is not that bad for a mining family from the N.E really.

I have implored them to 'cash in' and spend the lot travelling for many years, and they did do that, until he got ill. However, it now appears my sister (lives in a multi-million pound house in Seers Green) has been all over them, wasn't happy with the travelling thing, and has now 'arranged' the will.

So I don't expect anything, except a few oddments my children and I have commented on over the years (they have stickers on the bottom to that effect apparently - go figure), it doesn't bother me one jot, as we have more than enough to get by, it just annoys me that family can be so damn mercenary.

She may surprise me yet, but I doubt it.

I hate these kind of thing, I hope they re-arranged it behind her back when she revealed her true colours.

I saw how people show themselves when dad was an executor on a will and one of the people tried to get a lot more of the house at others expense (dad sorted it so they could buy at market rate) and they were not happy. In the end he put it on the market and they weren't interested at full price!

Not inherited by me but when my Granddad passed away my mum (his daughter) got a letter personally signed by the Haakon VII (The then King of Norway) thanking him for helping to liberate the country from the Nazi's as he was one of the first allied soldiers to enter the country.

A bamboo fly fishing rod from the 40's from my granddad (some thieving relative stole the reel), family story says Gran & Granddad won the pools back in the day.

I am hoping for the NSX which, if my father lives as long as I want him to, might be an incredibly rare car as it should be many many years hence. Also quite fancy his new (?) Fiat Dino.

I may have to fight my brother for them.

nothing yet, i say yet because death and taxes are inevitable.

my MIL has dementia and we may have to sell her place as it's getting more risky to keep her in her own place.

we are worried about selling the house to pay for her care, not because we want anything from it, but we are worried about how long the money will last, then we get into the murky world of the social services paying for her care. they don't even pay for her meals on wheels at present.

when she does go my wife will be a wreck, her dad died 15 years ago and she still gets uncomfortable seeing a funeral procession.

my parents i think are quite healthy.
Had pill to swalow that one and I bet if your MIL could have seen it coming she'd be equally as pissed off. The money has to come from somewhere to look after the elderley and infirm but it don't half scupper your plans to ensure your offspring have a little something to make life easier.

There must be a way around it??
well we are trying to see if there is a way that our daughter could buy the house at a reasonable price. we aren't trying to pull a fast one, but we are trying to see what can be done, but the house will end up with a mortgage back on it so as to pay for the home.

the worst bit is that as you say the MIL would be devastated to know what has to be done.

we are paying for carers to go in daily (3 times a day) and either my wife or her brother got in daily, i go with my wife when i can and my SIL is a rock and runs her to all sorts of appointments. however this is tearing through her money and we are already having to find £400 a month to cover the extra.

that £400 will pail into insignificance with the price of a home (over £3000 a month).

the way my money is going, my parents have 6 months smile

Unfortunately my old Nan is likely to be popping her cloggs in the next few months, if that. Late stage dementia is fking brutal.

I don't expect or want anything of value, I don't believe she has anything anyway. A momento or trinket would be nice just for memories sake, sadly I don't have anything of my Grandfather's when he went 10 years or so ago, so maybe something combining the two.

It's disgusting to see and hear stories of people scrabbling around after their parents or grandparents belongings just before they go. Entitled is such a nasty mindset that many people fall into, just because you came out of your mother doesn't mean you're owed anything.

just adding to this tread, although I posted earlier about inheriting a forest. But thats not funny.

anyway, amusing things from my grandparents and father. Also my mother who is alive but likes to hand me things.

a matchbox with gold sovereigns in. Some date back to the C16th.

a set of 8 1938 Berlin Olympic stamps. all stamped up with the Nazi swastika. Absolutely mint, but not worth much- lots were produced.

A suitcase of stamps from around the world, Victorian era and then through to the 50's.

A briefcase stuffed with mainly German currency. A lot of Reischmarks- often re-printed over in denominations of 100m and so on !!!

A one penny collection, dating over about 200 years, but in perfect chronological order.

A four leafed clover.

sets of players cigarette card books from the 30's.

A ww2 USA servicemans zippo lighter, handed to my father in Dresden when he was there during WW2 as a refugee, from said serviceman.

An atlas of the world, with commentary (a book with fold out maps) but as its from about 1600, the world hasn't been fully discovered so the earth looks mental ! lots of gaps and distortion. the commentaries on countries are great: eg Africa is basically a "nation of unchristen like savages" and so on.

A 1972 modern art painting (silk screen print) by patrick heron. which my wife will not let me display. Its actually not bad either.

unfortunately not. Family myth says it has some connection to King George VI, more likely the guy in the shop was called George.

just my good looks and humour.

Also more likely or not to peg it before 70 years old. Not inherited anything of monetry value from my Dad - plenty of other things Im eternally grateful for and happy with memories. As ali_kat has said - wishing I could have a few hours with him when he was healthy again is a daily thought.

oh yes strong teath from my Dads side. There is a lot to be said with having good teath.

That's my thoughts about my parents. Especially as my sister is a worthless bit of scum & doesn't deserve anything. I'd happily give up my half to see her get nothing.
