Sunspel will be doing 30% off for Black Friday so some good deals to be had if that’s your end of the market.

I got an early access email and they’ve lured me into buying a sleek wool gilet that should layer nicely under a coat.

Any good?

Are the trainer soles squidgy/soft or quite firm?

My work wardrobe is probably 90% ralph Lauren.

But I do buy from uk manufacturers. Aero leather jacket, a few Barbour coats, Northampton shoes. I will favour MiE when I spot it.

But all my underwear and base layers are Uniqlo. My laze about the house clothes are lululemon. Passable if I have to go out the door but not something I’d wear to a work meeting.

I rarely wear jeans now. But if I do they’ll be cheap Levi’s bought on work trips to the states.

The answer to where is probably 99% online now. Very different to 20 years ago.

Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda and M&S for all the basics. Coats, jackets and shoes from random internet places.

I very rarely "dress up" beyond a shirt and chinos, so have no need for fancy/expensive clothing.

Work I use Next, CT has gone downhill.

Casual and sports clothes and trainers, JD and FA.

Going out, Flannels.

Asos for basics like t shirts, etc.

Levi’s for jeans.

No idea but their sales are not what they once were. I’ve managed to snag a puffy for a tenner in the past and a +J duffel coat for next to nothing too but no chance of that now. My wife can shop in the children’s section as the clothes will fit her. Unfortunately that’s never going to work for me but I know they’re happy to leave stuff in the sale section with no price change for months. Personally I wouldn’t expect large final reductions.

I don’t know when they do it but every once in a while Lands End will do a big sale. They’ve been my go to for Christmas presents for some time as my Dad likes a long sleeve polo shirt but they haven’t done one in a while or else I’ve missed it.

Well that's the first couple of bits sorted treated myself to a couple of Sunspel Riviera Polos as it's Black Friday.

I don't know if they're worth it as you read mixed things online but I figured you only live once (or twice if you're into the whole Bond connection biggrin) and if they last a few years I'd sooner have a couple of nice good quality pieces than 5x £15 throwaway ones.

Any suggestions on sweaters?

Can't quite bring myself to pay £145 for their merino ones and I'm probably overthinking whether there's too much difference between a £45 and £80 "made in Bangladesh" one other than the store you buy it from.

Pretty much everything other than underwear comes from charity shops, so whatever they have in that takes my fancy and fits.

I was going to suggest AMI PARIS sweaters, but if £145 is too much you won't like the £300+++ price tag!

I think there's just something in my psychology that would really struggle to justify something like that.

And I'd be slightly terrified of snagging it or spilling my tea down it biggrin

I did post early on with a list of what I buy and from where but then the other posts started coming in so I deleted it as it clearly wasn't the norm on this forum.

I have found some good bargains this Black Friday though!!

I wouldn't have as that's their problem fk 'em biggrin

I see a lot of stuff I like it's just I can't personally justify spending the money and it's something I struggle with with lots of stuff not just clothing.

Anyone know if Arket and Asket are decent quality?

I am really struggling with understanding if a £100 merino sweater is actually any better quality than a £35 Uniqlo one.

I find it hard to get good stuff that fits, due to being tall and athletic build (powerfully built director jokes etc). I'm really restricted to places that do long fit/tall fit which limits my options, as most places seem to assume if you are tall you are also very wide which I'm not OR seem to assume everyone is short.

The stuff at Reiss is very nice for example, but the sleeves on an XL merino knit finish halfway up my forearm.

As such best options for me;

Knitwear/smart casual stuff etc - M&S. Complete no brainer - do tall fit, quality is fine, price point is attractive
Long sleeve t-shirts, long sleeve Henley's etc - Son of a Tailor. Custom sizes, excellent quality. Costs a bit more but worth it, and can get sleeves that fit.
Basic t-shirts - Asket. Do long fit, quality is top notch and they last unlike cheaper options
Outerwear - Hugo Boss, SuitSupply as they do coats in long fit
Smart trousers - Suit Supply, quality is off the charts
Chinos - Spoke, as they are quite customisable sizing wise and quality is top notch
Shirts - used to be Charles Tyrwhitt but they only do the sleeve length I need for "bigger" people now unfortunately, so have switched to Hawes & Curtis

I'm going to check out Hackett in person, as they've got some lovely stuff on their website and as above do a long/tall fit.

If anyone hasn't tried Asket or Son of a Tailor I'd 100% recommend giving them a go.

Edit; should add Suit Supply, Asket, Son of Tailor quality is noticeably higher than M&S stuff.

Mostly Vinted of late, for Levi's jeans, Canada Goose or North Face coats... ebay for suits, have found bargain suits for under £50, even one for £10.

Shoes from Amazon or Tu (Sainsburys), have too many Highland Kilts and stuff from ebay and Vinted, but am on more of a budget of late.

I haven't bought any clothes for a decade or more. I ask for clothes at Christmas or my birthday, tell them my size and they generally get it right. I remember going to buy a pair of jeans, seeing some stupid price like £80 and realising there is a way round this.

The only constraints for present buyers are: no trousers or jeans in any colour bar blue, brown, black, green or grey; no t shirts bearing any kind of message, no waistcoats, no footwear other than trainers or work boots. no socks other than black. brown or white, no ties, no knitwear, no hats. So far so good. Get bought some designer stuff occasionally - no discernible quality advantage over everyday brands.

Hoping I'm not being suckered by a good marketing team but I have to say Asket do look interesting.

Pricing not too stupid and seems a world away (literally) from the "made in Bangladesh" stuff everywhere else with a lot of it made in Portugal.

Twice the price of M&S merino and just about the only place I've seen so far where it seems the quality could be better and the prices also seem sensible.
