Gervais is a genius.

Sorry, but he is. The Office is comedy of kind the "I must belly laugh and spill my pint or it aint comedy" club, wont like. His standup is briliant.

If you want proper talentless wk, lets hear it for all the "comedians" who simply dress up, put on a camp accent and rely on homosexual double entendre for laughs?

Graham Norton - st.

Paul O'Grady - st.

Little Britain - st. (ok, they do other stuff other than raising cheap laughs at overtly gay dialogue - but the whole show deserves special mention for being unfeasibly st)

Alan Carr I actually think suffers from this a little, but is much better at mocking his own femininity, so that it doesnt feel like the old "Im funny becuse Im gay" act, more "Im gay and funny", which are subtley different. I like him.

Topically, I'd like to stand up for Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders at this point, as the only comediennes to make me laugh.

While we're on rancid sacks of st though, Jo Brand....

The only one I can think of that If ind genuinely unfunny is Peter Kay. I dunno, maybe I was brought up to need a bit more stimulation than a northerner going "garlic bread".
His bit about Sunday afternoons/evenings for those people of a certain age is very very good indeed.

Bullseye (spelling for eight pounds), taping the charts etc.

On the whole I've liked pretty much everything he's done I have to say.
His early 'comedy lab' stuff and 'that Peter Kay thing' showed he has plenty of talent. Phoenix Nights was good too IMO. But his cryptically titled 'Mum wants a bungalow' tour perhaps gave an insight into his (and many of his peers') motivation towards the 'popular pound'. The crap X-factor thing he did seemed indicative of wanting to please everyone and not upset anyone, whereas his old stuff was all about affectionate (and sometimes not so affectionate) pisstaking.

I can understand people not finding Gervais to their taste but I can't see how you can say he isn't funny as such.
I've heard that he's been to BTaP a couple of times. hehe

Supposed "classics" that I just don't find in the least bit funny

Jo Brand
That old Jewish guy who's jokes are all about being Jewish
Joan Rivers
Eddie Murphy - Raw
Chris Rock standup

but maybe you need to be cultural in tune, ie black, Jewish or American

also I know he is supposed to be a legend, but I just could not get into the stand-up of Richard Pryor

Went to a 'comedy' club a year or so ago and was not impressed.

It was in Leeds and we had some southerner with a routine revolving around people on the london Underground...hmmmm..frown

But worse we had some up her arse so called comedienne who's whole act was just to pick various sections of the audience and slag them off.

We were disgusted when a pair of girls who had been a victim of her waspish cheap 'humour' started to hit back with a few insults of their own and were rewarded by being thrown out by security.

The stuck up bint on stage was slow hand clapped after that and finished her act to a very muted reception.
Sounds like Mandy Knight who we saw at Jongluers last November. Did she also keep letching onto young lads in the audience and ending every sentence with either love or darling?

Andy Parsons. Everything he spouts is so cringeworthy and might raise a laugh in a playground full of 2 year olds. You know the punchline before he's even opened his mouth.
I bloody despise him. Every sentence starts with the same word. "Now........." In a voice that metaphorically brings a cheese greater, a slice of lemon and my bks to the table.
Agreed entirely. I was worried I was the only one for a moment who hated him.

Fast Show was an absolute pearler of comedic proportions. I don't think I have ever seen since a comedy show with its genius. I find humour to be almost geographic, the aussie's idea of humour is very different, yet it works if done right. Timing is the mark of a true comedian.

Paul Merton I used to find funny, now he just makes snide comments, then looks smug about it. Also Michael Mcentire, this time last year I thought he was hilarious, but somethings gone wrong.

OMG, it was turgid nonsense. His stand up (at the apollo) is so poor, I have to turn over.

I guess that I will have to accept that I am in the minority and take my vicar of dibley dvds home with me.....

How has this thread gone on so long without the name Marcus Bridgestock being mentioned. Ripping off Ben Elton's act from the 1980s isn't funny.
