You sound like a bit of a snob, to be honest. There's nothing wrong with a Sam Smiths and it's £3 a pint. They're lovely pubs and are all over the city.
There are a few. But you wouldn't plan a night out around them.

Can I ask why you're so obsessed with London, living within it and having a snooty view of "provincial towns"? If seems extremely odd, London is fantastic and for people like me who have lived here all our lives is "home", but it's by no means the yardstick by which to judge other towns, nor the people who live within them.
I'm not obsessed by it. I agree, you were mad to live here and work in Farnborough
Can I ask why?

Just seemed a lot of money to pay in rent and a time on the train when you could drive?

My home to Farnborough via train was under an hour door to door. Impossible in the car. Camberley is a shockingly badly connected town so driving is the only option now. Still would love to know why people choose to live in Surbiton, I'm from London and Clapham was a means to an end when I started working, Surbiton just smacks of wanting to live within a travelcard zone. Each to their own though, I guess.

Its great! The total lack of any trains going well.. anywhere from Camberley means house prices are much cheaper than say woking.

I've done the maths and it's quicker to go via Guildford to Blackwater and then get a cab!

Indeed. It racks up quick. I wasn't complaining which has been missed. Just referencing that nice nights out are not cheap.

Re surbiton, river, parks, ridiculously fast train to where I work, (from Clapham it would take you 5 mins less time to get there than me) near to the country for cycling, I can afford a property here, if I want a night out with people in claaaaaam the it's 10 min train and £20 cab home. Last train 1.05 home for midweek beers. There's also plenty of pubs round here and loads of my mates live nearby. But apparently I should conform to the mid 20's stereotype and live in Dalston next to a chicken shop? No thanks. Oh and it is in a travelcard zone.

Not sure anybody said that okgo. I was bemused by your comments regarding me moving to Caversham, why did you make them? Fair enough if all your pals etc are in Surbiton, it's just generally an area I've always know some of the older generations of my family to live in and has far too close a proximity to Kingston, so I'm probably guilty of prejudiced assumption of what it's like day in, day out.

There are lots of non White British in London, have you factored in healthcare for your blood pressure?

Apart from property, do we think costs of London are vastly different to Manchester? I went recently and was surprised that the prices were very similar (food/drink)...

If you are coming from Reading, Blackwater is several stops before Guildford.
The A329 is normally jammed at peak times especially past Bracknell. Outside of peak, it's not too bad.

Sorry, I meant from London, not Reading.

Edit - you just missed several of my posts, please re-read.

I just spotted this, maybe you should re-read my post as you seem to back my argument up here. Fair enough, zone 6 is still a zone, I guess.

It makes no odds to me. I cycle. But just thought your post could do with at least being correct. It could be zone 10 for all I care. My door to door is less than some colleagues that live in z2 when I do use the train.

Easy to be bemused if you don't understand the rationale. I can't understand why someone would want to live in Surbiton, but each to their own. And you'd be surprised how many people live on the outskirts of zones 2/3/4 who commute out of town for work, I'm far from being the only one.
I live in NW1 and commute out west to zone 6 every day. It's much easier than living in zone 6 and commuting to NW1 each day, plus I've got everything on my doorstep on evenings & weekends. Seems like the best of both worlds to me smile
But not as easy as living in zone 6 and commuting to zone 6...

Surely you'd prefer a short commute 5 days of the week rather than the 2 days at weekends?

Well my son, is just about to start a years industrial placement in North West London as part of his university course. They pay £18K a year which works out at about £1200 a month take home.

He and another lad are renting a 2 bed flat, 2 miles from the Labs they will be working in, and it's costing £1250 a month so £625 each. He won't pay council tax, due to his student status, and shops in Aldi. He thinks he'll save £300 a month.

I think then that £18K is enough to live in London.

I think he'll be taping you up within a fortnight, in fact I reckon you've already subbed him the money for the deposit and first months rent.

Minimum wage in London is less than £18k though so I guess people do live in that..
