I found hitting a deer a very unpleasant experience as a youth. I would have found explaining to my father why a tree trunk was lodged in the front of his pick-up truck considerably more unpleasant.
Glad to see the dog made it though. Precisely because the driver didn't lift off it appears.

In some countries the police will attend every incident that they become aware of, and take a keen interest in apportioning blame via the traditional points system.
My father's pick-up was, (and still is), located in just such a country. Oddly, the insurance company there may also view such an accident as no-responsibility, in the case of the carcass being available.
Irrespective, while I would of course apply the brakes with enthusiasm for the benefit of pretty much any furry/winged creature, I also wouldn't swerve for anything smaller than a rhinoceros.
Far too many people drive into trees, lamp posts and parked cars for the sake of a hedgehog, if their stories are to be believed.
