People living near a house where a teenager was fatally injured on Bonfire Night said the area was like a "horror movie" at this time of year.

The 17-year-old boy, named locally as Qais Muhammad Ratyal, died after he reportedly fell into a greenhouse at the house on Vickerman Street, Halifax.

West Yorkshire Police had previously been called to the area after reports of fireworks being set off nearby.

Michele Khan said the usually quiet area was "just horrible" on 5 November.

She said: "Normally this area is very quiet but that night it is like a horror movie, just horrible.

"We were standing just in the garden, the ambulance and police came and children were still standing on the corner and throwing the crackers [fireworks] at us and we had to run."

Looks like he’s fallen through the roof and landed on a butternut squash. What a way to go.

An earlier report which now seems to have vanished said he was being chased by the police, the fact that the police have referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, probably confirms this, It was in Halifax not Bradford.

I made the mistake of clicking on the link to the boy escaping police falls through green house. The headlines make grim reading...

Thankfully King Charles is lifting spirits in the city.

Isn't it illegal to set up CCTV to monitor a public space, unless GDPR & DPA rules are followed? Quite an effort to go to, assuming they are indeed being complied with.

Awful driving on several counts there. Not that it excuses the driving but I can't see any cycle lanes on the footpath so the cyclists shouldn't be using the crossing.

It’s like that area needs a bit of policing. Imagine stopping the car for things seen in the video and issuing some advice / tickets etc

Seems so logical and simple

I was involved in an accident on Horton Grange Road. I was on the main road, a car pulled out of a side road within a few feet of me and stopped immediately, I ran into the back of his car. Of course, he produced witness statements which were all false.

There will never be a reason why I would go to Bradford.

yes

In some parts the red light is optional. I saw a car go through 5 red lights in Dewsbury recently. These weren't just near misses either, just completely ignored them.

Yes sadly lots

It just feels like we need a service that could police the entire country with a consistent rule book

If you drive like a numpty in Bradford you get x, if you drive like a numpty in Southampton you also get x

I’d call it the police force

Problem is that you need quite a large police force just to get Bradford knocked back into a lawful part of the UK.

My guess (not at all justifying breaking the law) based on what you've said (being able to see 5 sets of lights and observe someone go through them) is that those sets of lights were in such close proximity to one another and seemed to be staying green for such stupidly short periods of time that the driver probably knew the stretch of road and wasn't keen on wasting time and a whole host of other things waiting at a red just to set off when it turns to green, only for the next one to be red.

The only place on Earth I've driven in where you proceed through a green to be met very shortly afterwards with a red (and repeat that process several times) is France.

In the UK I have proceeded through such lights whereby they're either green or have just turned to amber - for whose benefit I have no idea, given I could be the only vehicle on the stretch at a highly non-peak time.

Likewise I have been sat waiting at red after red for no reason.

I think we've all been there, and know we would all find it frustrating to proceed only to have to stop again for no apparent purpose.

I've noticed my French observation becoming commonplace in the UK, including where I live, where new traffic light systems have been installed and the sequences amended with.

It is frustrating at night / early hours etc, although France does at least have and make use of flashing amber to denote 'proceed if safe to do so'.

Maybe it just wouldn't work in the UK or cause mayhem from a liability point of view. Maybe that's why flashing amber is seemingly on the decline at pelican crossings.
