Very cold this morning here (near Halifax).
-1 and a thick layer of ice on all my car windows.

The local forecast is to remain cold, but with rain. How come that rain won't fall as hail or snow when it's so cold?
confused
You're talking about the ground temperature. The atmosphere is made up of various layers, at different temperatures, and so it's the upper air temperatures you need to consider just as much (if not more). When we see the multicoloured charts in this thread, they are most often looking at the upper air temperatures, and it's -8oC we are looking for there in order to have snow fall.

Of course, if it's -8 up high and +4 down low - then the snow will melt on the way down or when it lands!

I just enjoy a playful wind up with them.

I find it very good to watch and I've learned a few things about it as well.

Still want snow to play in though.

Who's calling us Muppets grumpywink

Sadly, whilst there's a hell of a lot of weather to come over the next week or so, there isn't too much nailed on for cold fans to get excited about.

The charts are showing absolutely everything from bland, mild nothingness through destructive storms to snowmageddon for much of the country at the same time. I guess the good thing to read into the anomolous outputs is that a change is afoot and the models can't agree on what that change might be.

For the first time in a few years, I am utterly, utterly confused about what the weather might be like in a week's time...

If I were to take a stab, I would say:

This week: Very windy Wednesday night / Thursday in W Ireland, Scotland, NW England and West Coasts

Next week: Windy (possibly very windy in the South), wet and cold on Christmas Day, with possible snow in the north and then turning progressively colder, with more instances of snow showers.

Following week: Further cold with snow potential.

Although, this is pretty close to an guess right now.

Isn't that cockney slang for "your feet stink"?

Glad to see the winds and rain easing a bit for tomorrow afternoon, I'm collecting a new (classic) car which I've got to drive from Peterborough back up to the Yorkshire Dales. This is a car that even in period was said to be 'lethal' in the wet.

Hey ho.

If you see one of these on its roof on the A1 tomorrow afternoon please stop and hand me a Marlboro Light.

There's definitely a chance of cold getting pulled down across the country, so up north wins!

I'm sincerely hoping that I get pulled on the 25th (after the kids have gone down.)
